In this post you will find the data courtesy of Listenbald and Linksys for windows 98 and xp. I think it might work with other programs, but you should read through anyway, it has some useful information.
WINDOWS 98 LINKSYSA static IP address should be set if: 1) You can’t access the router’s setup page when you type “192.168.1.1” into your web browser or 2) You are using a 2-way streaming media program with the router such as Netmeeting, Napster, PCAnyhwere, etc. You can leave DHCP on the router enabled (in other words, leave DHCP alone) as long as the IP address you assign is set according to the instructions below.
A.Assigning a static IP on a computer: On your computer’s desktop, click on the “Start” button, go up to “Settings”, then “Control Panel”. Find the “Network” control panel and double click. Click on the “IP Address” tab and then click on “Specify an IP address”. Any address that has the “192.168.1” beginning and ends in any digit between 2-99 is fine (For example: “192.168.1.2” or “192.168.1.3”). Choose your IP Address and type it in the “IP Address” slot. Note: Each computer on your network needs a different IP address, never assign the same IP address to any two computers on your network.
B.Assigning the Subnet Mask: The Subnet Mask will always be 255.255.255.0
C. GATEWAY: Click on the “Gateway” tab. You want to make the router your Gateway, so type in the address for the Gateway as “192.168.1.1” and click “Add”.
D. DNS: The DNS information is only required if you are an @Home cable modem user. If you are an @Home user, click on the “DNS Configuration” tab. The host name is the host name @Home gives you and typically ends with a “–a”, “-b”, or “-c”. The domain name is whatever @Home gives you. An example would be: occa.home.com. The “DNS Server Search Order” is the “Primary” and “Secondary” DNS information that is on your @Home paperwork. Type it in the slot and click “Add”. The “Domain Suffix Search Order” is usually the same as the “Domain”, type it in and click “Add”.
II.Congratulations! You have now completed the process of setting a static IP for your computer! Now, if you would like to use any special applications that involve 2-way streaming media, you will use the Port Forwarding feature on the router to allow that information to pass through the router’s firewall. An example of programs that need port forwarding would be Napster, NetMeeting, Age of Empires, Quake 3, PCAnywhere, and any VPN program.
A. Determine which ports your program is using. If you don’t know the ports view the Spreadsheet entitled “Well Known Ports” or click the following link: Write all the ports down your program is using (For example: Napster is port 6699). Then go to the “Forwarding” tab of the router by clicking here http://192.168.1.1/Forward.htm or by typing in the web browser http://192.168.1.1
and clicking on the “Advanced Features” tab and then the “Port Forwarding” tab. Within this page you will see “Service Port Range” in the first column. Please see the screen shot below for reference.

You have configured static IP address in Windows XP.II.Congratulations!
In that column type in the range of ports your application uses (For example, Napster uses range 6699-6699). If you have two different ranges, use the second slot for the second range, the third slot for third range, etc. After you have typed in all the ranges, go to the column to the right that says “IP Address” and type the last number you set for your static IP address on your computer (For example, if you set “192.168.1.2” type “2” into the slot). Remember, once you forward ports to one computer, you can’t forward them to another computer, so, for example, you can only use Napster on one computer, the computer you forwarded port 6699 to. After you have done this press“Apply” and you are ready to go!
