I have decided not to involve myself in the glory race for the game, so there are a lot of things I'm curious about, namely Houses and other political motivations.

What motivates a faction to join a particular house? If that house is dominant, what would motivate them to leave that house and join another one? What kinds of things trigger wars between houses? What stops most people from taking over the villages of unaffiliated players? What's with parishes where someone with a single village is the steward when they're the only person in their house in that parish? What motivates everyone else to vote that player in or allow them to vote themselves in? Or parishes where a player without even a faction is the steward, why wouldn't a faction with a house take the parish for their house? Since I don't involve myself in these issues, they're things I don't understand, but I'd like to know more about them.

Here are some answers ... not a comprehensive view but it is some of my take on your questions...
What motivates a faction to join a particular house?
People sometimes like to be on the winning side. Being in a house means a player has a colour and cannot be mistaken for a free-agent.
If that house is dominant, what would motivate them to leave that house and join another one?
They might not wish to become involved in a war between houses.
What kinds of things trigger wars between houses?
Houses need to control counties and provinces to control countries and gain glory. Houses go to war over territory control.
What stops most people from taking over the villages of unaffiliated players?
such a player could be vassal to a player who does have an affiliation. Also There are honour penalties for attacking lower rank players. Actually it is quite tricky being a neutral player.
What's with parishes where someone with a single village is the steward when they're the only person in their house in that parish? What motivates everyone else to vote that player in or allow them to vote themselves in?
Someone persuades thaem to vote for the house candidate, maybe by bribery, or by proper politicing, or maybe making them an offer they cannot refuse.
Or parishes where a player without even a faction is the steward, why wouldn't a faction with a house take the parish for their house?
The steward will have come to some agreement over voting in the county election with the house surrounding.

He who hesitates is.... er....
