With Darren and Paul giving us the all clear to talk about SH:kingdoms I've started a thread where alpha testers can answer any questions people may have about the game

Please note that video and pictures are still not allowed at this stage.

A Q&A?Well in that case here are few things i'd like to see implemented(after playing the recent alpha).

(1) On the research tree for military section i would like to see plus instead of the minus when it comes to upgrading the R.O.F for catapults(something from last year i thought would be fixed)

(2) Engineeers working the catapult and not like the werewolf launcher from SHLegends.

(3)A decent combat system (many have mentioned this in both alphas-A SH2 style or similar)

(4)Lose the ridiculous amounts of AI troops that attack from their half-ruined castles(at least with crusader extreme YOU have a chance to fight them off.

(5)Interdiction- make it work against the AI so while you are offline.

(6) This has been mentioned, but i'll say it again-Mercenaries,bring them back(not those pitiful peasants with pitchforks,at least the spearmen from legends were very useful).

(7) Many people have commented on lack of military action due to building and replacing armies are TOO expensive, increase army size i.e remove slots taken by merchants/scouts/monks.

(8) Can we see the return of the maceman(possibly in a different form-more historically accurate.Bring back the crossbowman and utilize the horse archer from crusader/sh2.

(9)The economic side of this game is (imo)just about right.

(10) are somethings in the tech tree really in need of research?Apple farming? Dairy farms?I think one or two research points just to unlock them would suffice.

Finally i did enjoy the alphas apart from when it crashed and i lost my research that i had just started.

This game is in need of a few tweaks and when completed could stand alongside the other Stronghold games.
As for SH2 there are still a few bugs with the cutscenes-showing the wrong characters and an invasion that just stans at the edge of the map(*even with editing i cannot fix it)*for this i used the SH2 mapunlocker from the strongholdknights fansite. just for the record i am reffering to mission'kill the hawk'.

regards

Dredde

(3)A decent combat system (many have mentioned this in both alphas-A SH2 style or similar)
See Darrens thread, Alpha 4 information which mentions Captains and Tactics. But I think the basic combat system is going to be how it is now.
(5)Interdiction- make it work against the AI so while you are offline.
If you have researched Interdiction then you can do that as things stand in alpha 3. It just costs a lot of faith points to interdict all your villages for 24 hours. (If that is what you are getting at).
(7) Many people have commented on lack of military action due to building and replacing armies are TOO expensive, increase army size i.e remove slots taken by merchants/scouts/monks.
.......
(9)The economic side of this game is (imo)just about right.
The unit numbers limitations and the economic side go hand in hand IMHO. We have to compromise: Do we want a massive defence force or do we want a huge goods trading force or do we want to keep a bunch of monks at the ready to launch forth on excom missions or interdict missions? OR do we run balanced villages with a strong defence, a good trading capacity, and phase in a monk now and a gain. The possibilities are legion. and that is part of the balance in the game, is it not?

Also if a player is complaining of the expense of raising their army, are they running a good enough economy? Maybe they should have got their economy right first before embarking on a military posture without the finance to back it?

Edit:
Just to explain for anyone who has not followed the Kingdoms testing so far: "alpha 3" is the current, and third, aplha game test that FireFly have run on the Kingdoms MMO.

Well i was also reffering to big name players who said that replacing armies was expensive-in the longterm.

As for realism ,there were three AI castles in matlock for over a week where any attack was soaked up,even at a later stage when the castles were in ruins attacks from them were upwards of 500+ .

Another issue was account hacking, which caused a lot of trouble and lead to accusations of account hacking-Then the site was down for a day or two, mainly house 7 as regards to some house 13 members-they know who they are.the word 'favouritism 'came up a few times and so did a certain persons' name-but that person told me what really happened via email .

Then came patch after patch, but about three weeks ago i had enough,i was logged out three times as in as many minutes,i had several different messages about that-from server error to 'session has timed out' when i did get to log-in i had beeen attacked by the wolf from a pathetic castle by a force of 695 troops, fortunately i had a well built castle and losses were minimal.I however sent three armies of 300,350 and 400 to attack this castle and-yes- i got the 'session has timed out' again-that was it- i had enough of it and uninstalled it.

And now we have another 'carrot' to entice us,well not me,i believe to fully test a game ALL aspects should be playable ,so that a fair and impartial review can be given.

This is one game that won't be in my collection.

Please note the game is in alpha testing. Alpha testing means a lot of things needs to be either added or fixed. How a game works (or does not work) in the alpha stage should have very little to say over if one like to play a specific game or not. Testing is about finding as many errors as possible so they can get fixed. Testing is actually work but testers are allowed to have fun while working but should also know it can be very frustrating trying to continue testing while bugs are popping up here and there.

Edit: this thread was also originally meant as a Questions and Answers thread, not Quality Assurance.

What was the point of Philosophy research? It lowered gold costs for research points, but the next point cost pretty much the same as if you hadn't bought the point and researched. Am I missing something?

The short explanation of Philosophy in the research tree should be more comprehensive. The branch not only lowers the total cost for a research point. It also lowers the degree of the rise of costs from point to point. And this is decisive.

Best strategy would be to wait until the rank of Gentleman (I think, when you get access to Philosophy), to invest all the research into Philosophy and then start buying points.

It's difficult to see the effect of researching Philosophy as it lowers the cost in gold by a pretty low percentage. If one waits until the cost is pretty high and then do all the Philosophy research at once one can see it makes a difference.

In alpha 1 I think it was, I did all the Philosophy research in one go and bought every Research Point I put into it and ended up paying less for research anyway so there is saved gold. The question is to find out when to research Philosophy as all research takes time and each research done adds a bit to that time, so it has to be at some point where you can afford using time on researching Philosophy instead of for example weapon production. There is also research into lowering the time it takes to do research but that takes time too.

Here is my latest opinion on Kingdoms.

This is a new and unique direction in which to take the franchise.

Why the change of mind you ask?

Well as we can't go into to much detail,i shall only say this.(those who have played the alpha know what i mean)

Not so long ago critical changes were made to the military part of the tech tree-sorry wrong game(been playing generals),research tree and had a blast attacking the AI while using(censored)but i didnt use it against other players, but i know some who did, might just use it in the beta when someone gets to frenidly raiding my stockpile- as if that will happen!

His troops got a warm welcome!

Lord Dredde, Just letting you know that it is ok to discuss details of the game. FF just ask that no-one posts video or graphics from the game.
