It's not really a new map but the alter ego of Chateau Gaillard id 136. This time I calibrate the map to be play ONLY as attacker. If you want to play it as defender I suggest you play Chateau Gaillard id 136.
It could be play from easy to hard. However the more important is to find the right way to assault the castle. My advise : play it at normal, try later at hard if you want and dont be ashame to play it at easy so it's now notorious that my maps are too hard.
Second advise : study carefully the map and the castle. If you charge like a bull no doubt you will be merciless cut in pieces.
Assault Chateau Gaillard is an historical siege, but perhaps a little less accurate than his alter ego ID 136. To be exact, it's perhaps the most famous siege in french medieval history.
More story is include in the map description, but more important are the files in the package including the story of the siege in 1204 and pictures. Mostly source are Medieval encyclopedia by Viollet le Duc, and 2000 years of french fortification by Pierre Rocolle.
Feel free to e-mail me if you feel the map is too hard. I could give tips, and even send save in play I win.
This is one of the most recognized and famous fortresses in France. The author has done a fantastic job recreating Château Gaillard. Included are pictures and an informative history of this powerful Castle of Richard I.
Playability: 5/5 this is a well thought out siege and the minute you start you will come under attack by the English Horsemen. This attack is not unavoidable if you are quick and because it is not a forced loss of troops I commend the author. Movement around the castle is tricky and necessary so be on your guard. The AI defends Château Gaillard well and this is a testament to the castle design as well as the author’s skill.
Balance: 3/5 I personally felt the defending troop balance was too reliant on Ballistics. However, what you have is a well-defended castle with plenty of other troops to make it fun. Unfortunately, ridges between elevations provide a serious weakness to the defenders as one can simply advance small squads of bowmen under the cover they provide and decimate the defenders. This will not be without a loss and although a war of attrition will be heavily in the attackers favor it will still be a challenge to take this fortress.
Creativity: 4/5 the author has spent an incredible amount of effort to recreate this spectacular fortress and the design of the defenses are exceptional and lend themselves well to the Stronghold configuration. As pursuant to the actual castle there is truly only one way to the Keep. Beware, a wrong turn could lead to heavy casualties.
Map Design: 3/5 the castle design is excellent, second to none. I do feel the surrounding terrain suffers; especially those ridges as they are the dominant land feature and nothing has been done with them. A few rocks or vegetation and a little variation in height would have been far more realistic and also would have limited the previously mentioned weakness of this map. Altogether, a very good effort at recreating one of the most famous French medieval fortresses.
Story/Instructions: 5/5 in this category the author excels, surpassing a serious hindrance as far as his English goes, with the amount of information provided. The history is engaging and the accompanying photos really set the feel for this siege map. A lot of time and effort has gone into providing the reader with a real understanding of the castle and its history and accordingly the author is to be commended. Excellent Work!!
In summary, a great attacking siege download. Highly recommended!
