Hi, thanks for looking at my scenario.

This is my first Crusader map and was my entry for the recent Design Contest, where, I'm very pleased to say, it won Best Economic category.

The story for the map is in-game, but as a rough outline you must first defend yourself in a small manor house and then take responsibility for the defence of a nearby village. You may have to think fast at the beginning and make good use of what is available, it should then develop into a more familiar invasion map.

As ever, happy gaming ..... bsr

talos_911 You could have elaborated a bit Jacu...I'm sure writing a few lines would not take more than a few seconds of your time...then again, atleast you have the decency to review maps which you like *sigh*

I would have reviewed it myself except that my SH:C cd broke and I still can't find a new one in the market :(

I did see the ratings but thought that, as English isn't his first language, it might have been hard for him to write a full review.
talos_911 Ah...right.

Thanks for the clarification GillB

PLAYABILITY (4). This is a little beauty that provided me with a few hours of raw entertainment. You must build up your defences at an isolated manor house, and then beat off roaming bands of infidels, before being given the opportunity to take control of the garrison town and prove yourself in a final series of battles. It kept me coming back for more.

BALANCE (5). In my estimation this is a perfectly balanced mission, surely the hardest nut to crack in the designer’s pantry. You start with 10,000 gold in the kitty, and have access to a well-stocked market, but there are very limited building options. Four signposts provide for a variety of attacking situations that kept me guessing throughout. I managed to crack it after a few false starts, but it was a close-run thing.

CREATIVITY (4). I like cede scenarios and this is one of the best. The designer has a keen eye for detail and that is evident throughout.

MAP DESIGN (4). This is a very interesting map with a wadi or stream bisecting the playing area. Irrigation ditches are a neat touch. The manor house lies amidst tremendous devastation that hints at an even bloodier past. There’s a good-looking settlement with a few obvious defence weaknesses that might require attending to in the later stages. The area has a wide variety of resources available - not that you can do much with them.

STORY/INSTRUCTIONS (4). There’s a very good, descriptive story that nicely outlines the plot and mission subtleties.

CONCLUSION. I don’t really know why this map won an economic scenario prize because you have no control over any industrial or food processing buildings, or farms, and there are no economic goals to meet. Presumably, the assessors recognised a good thing when they saw one, and felt that it deserved a prize. In that respect, I couldn’t agree more. This invasion mission doesn’t get a higher score only because it isn’t really long enough for my particular tastes. The mission lasts for just over 10 game years, which is probably ideal if you are a busy individual with a life to lead. For myself, I could have happily sacrificed a few more hours of my existence to really getting to grips with this rogue trader chappy. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and look forward to many more maps from BSR.

Playability: 4.5
This map lives up to the talk of the past reviewers, its awesome. The fighting is fast and you need to keep defense on your mind throughout. One thing I found unique about this map: incoming engineers that really mess up your rushed and limited early building. But this is INTENDED and doesnt flaw it at all, instead it makes it more fun. Since you dont start with any missle troops (two engineers for a fire ballista), your foot troops end up chasing these engineers around to try to kill them, so that the enemy is not too close to build. Hilarious, but deadly because if you dont get a defense up in time you will be toast.

Balance: 4.5
I was going to say, "just a little hard...", but I think that I will say for the record instead, "Perfect balance." I took off a half because I didnt win, but came within maybe 10 troops of beating back the last invading swordsmen.

Creativity: 5
Author uses game mechanics masterfully. Gets the job done, incorporating subtle economic pressures and desperate millitary challenges. I'll actually give this a 5+, if I could because of the original feel. I felt the need to call my lawyer with some of the challenges I came up against. I wont say anymore, because I dont want to spoil the map for someone reading this and deciding whether to download. Its a MUST PLAY.

Map Design: 5
As stated, the town buildings get transfered to you after you beat back the first waves. You can use them or recycle them (some cant be built again because of availability: barracks most importantly). But this effect is INTENDED by the author. I have to congratulate them on a JOB WELL DONE. You wont find a better mix of fighting, thinking, and crying (count on alot of this because its tough!).

Story/Instructions: 4.5
You spelled most of the words correctly and made some sense in the process. And you tell the story in the set up screen (along with the goals) which I like. GOOD.

Additional Comments:
I think this map is on its way to the top ten. Download and play it, and then rate it! If you have an extra ten minutes, download and play my new release: And Justice For All and rate it.
