Swamp Castle

Author File Description
File Details
Map Size: 300x300 (Medium)
Difficulty: Normal
All the other kings said I was daft to build a castle in the swamp, but I built it anyway! It sank into the swamp.

So I built another one! That one sank into the swamp.

So I built a third one. That one burned down, fell over, and sank into the swamp.

But the fourth one. The fourth one STAYED UP!

I totally forgot to give any kind of description other than the Monty Python quote, and for that I'm sorry. Here goes:

Swamp Castle is a rather simple construct built into a wide plain of mostly marshlands. As such, there was plenty of pitch for the builders to harvest, so watch out for multiple killing fields when approaching the castle, and use them when defending. There is an outer palisade wall that acts as a fascade for three sides of the castle, peppered with archer platforms. Once breached, there is a compact but heavily manned inner castle where can be found the keep, and the Tall Tower (where the guards are not to do anything apart from making sure the prince doesn't eneter the room, even if the king comes to get him...just make sure he doesn't start to sing). There are also four lookout points on the map, three wood, and one based around a perimeter tower. Tunnelers will tend to veer off towards these instead of the main wall, so if you plan to use them, the lookout posts must be completely levelled. Then again, two of the lookout posts give you a better shot at the pallisade archer platforms. There are also some patrols near the entry point, which shouldn't be difficult to dispatch, but should not be ignored.

I'd like to thank my first round playtesters Jayhawk and Vargard who played a VERY rudimentary early version where the castle had almost no defenses, and my second round playtesters Inquizative, Brave Sir Robin, and Bartman who helped me flesh it out a bit mroe after the glaring balance issues were covered.

Thanks for the review, sorry if you felt I gave away one hint too many in my previous comment.

I will say that the balance of the scenario is the one thing that worried me the most, especially since it was always my weakest skill as a designer in AOK, and since it was the major flaw brought up in all my playtesting. I'm going to see what I can potentially do about either weakening the attackers or strengthening the defenders.

PS: Any particular comments on the map design? I notice you gave it a 3, but didn't much mention it in your review, so I'm curious if you have any suggestions on how I could have improved that.
Lord Malibar I subtracted points, rightly or wrongly, on Map Design partly because the dogs were placed where they attacked their own people when released. I also thought you missed a great defensive use of the swamp. The bogs were not placed where they slowed troops down much once they got within firing range of the stonghold. Why construct a Castle in a swamp if you don't plan to use the bogs as killing fields?

Had those issues not come up, the map would have been a 4 minimum.

Thanks again for your comments. I may work them into a later v2 after I release a few seiges I currently have in production.
