After Crac des Chevaliers, here is the second most important stronghold of the Order of the Knights of Saint John, the Hospitallers. Margat is a mamoth castle built on a triangular plateau with extensive views over the Mediterranean Sea, in modern day Syria. It is one of the most sophisticated and powerful castles built by the Crusaders and it remained in Christian hands for more than a century and a half, until its final fall in 1285. This fall marked the end of an era: just like the Templars at Saphet, Beaufort and Chastel Blanc and their fellow Hospitallers at Crac, the defenders of Margat had stood desperately against an overwhelming foe, but their bravery would not change the course of History. Only six years later, in 1291, the fall of the city of Acre would mark the definitive end of the Crusader era.
This map is a cede-castle scenario. You start as the leader of a small group of Knights of the Hospital, controlling a small coastal village outside Margat. Your task will be to defend against outlaw bands and petty Arab lords trying to harass you, while you struggle to collect a certain amount of gold in order to be granted control of the castle. Once you have taken control of Margat begins the second part of this scenario, which plays like a defending siege. Here I have tried to reconstruct faithfully the first part of the final siege of Margat, which Sultan Qala'un layed to the castle in 1285. After almost a month of heroic resistance, the Hospitallers were forced to negotiate their surrender, as the Muslims had undermined large part of the southern part of the castle. Don't forget to have a look at the readme file I have included in the package, it will help you understand how the scenario works. You can also find the full history of this impressive fortress included in the zip file. Margat has been castle of the week 60, I recommend you check out the page: www.stronghold.heavengames.com/history/cw/cw60 where a beautiful write-up by Sulis can be found. Well, that's all, I hope you will find this map interesting; Margat is an exceptional castle and its sophisticated defenses are most impressive. Best regards, Velerefontis
