Great effort by the designer here. The castle when attacking presents a tricky siege if you attack, which I presume is the required method of playing given the brief introduction via the description download page. The map as a whole harps back to the original sieges that came supplied with the game and takes the basic functions required for a good siege. Genuinely good fun to play and has replayability too.
With a careful plan, the castle can be taken. I struggled with the units provided and changed these for 100 crossbowmen, 2 engineers and 104 pikemen. The crossbowmen were used to clear a section of wall at the bottom area of the castle, as well as knocking out the ballista on top of the round towers. This allowed me to build catapults, moving them as close as I dare to the castle, and pummelling through the walls. With a hefty starting pot of gold, real damage can be done, including taking out the caged war dogs along the south/east part of the castle. I'd prefer to see less gold used here, maybe enough for 3-4 catapults/trebuchets. With such a large amount of gold available, you can quietly pick away at the castle, taking plenty of crossbowmen as you go. Dead cows were used to kill off the swordsmen at the foot of the keep, just before I broke through the walls. Once I had a clear path to the keep I used 10 pikemen, closely controlling them to fill in moat and therefore allowing the remaining pikemen to march into the keep. Losses were 70%, and I may have had enough pikemen to rid the castle of the defending archers/crossbowmen too.
Balance is very good, a decent challenge but a map that is beatable, which is surely the goal of a siege map?
Whilst there was nothing here that struck you as being radically different, the map in general was well done and I found the almost concentric design of the castle to be highly effective at defending itself. Nice work.
Map Design: 3/5
Again, not a bad effort. The castle looks good and has a solid design to it. Not the most inspiring of designs, and would have score much higher with maybe a bit more terrain modelling and life within the castle, by way of buildings, farms, etc etc.
A bit of a weak area here. No story as such and only minimal notes to accompany the map. Needs a bit more content and maybe a theme to grab the attention of the player?
I enjoyed this map immensely, it's fun to play and will keep you amused. Good, solid effort.
