Ashkelon was a city of ancient Canaan and later of the Philistines.

During the Crusades, Ashkelon (which was known to the Crusaders as Ascalon) was an important fortress for defending the Kingdom of Jerusalem from Egyptian attacks. Although the Egyptians were defeated there by the Crusaders in 1099, the city itself was not taken until 1153. Ashkelon was later destroyed by Saladin as a defensive measure during the Third Crusade. It was rebuilt but the site was abandoned during the 1300s.

You will take control of this small town and defend it against two large Egyptian armies - it wont be easy.

Well, I feel this map to be a first mapmaking try. Effort is obvious, but sadly, I feel, plagued with lack of experience. It’s not a failure however and the map is perfectly playable. Story is interesting and informative, but his translation in map action is quite strange. Author promise us for example 2 large Egyptians army. I didn’t count how many army stormed the castle. Alternative small raiding groups and large army prevented me to do it. Here is not the problem, because Egyptians army were nothing else than European crusaders army. I can understand Saracens troops are not optimal to storm walls, but launching instead pure Europeans troops break a little ambiance.
The real problem of the map is the player have too much advantage : unusual large farming area, unrestricted market place, stone quarrie and iron deposit very close to the stockpile ect … You can for example build a bunch of iron mine which are highly productive and close to the stockpile. Excedent could be sold and fairly enhance your treasury. Easy victory could easily be achieved without use pitch nor mercenary camps. Balance problem isn’t really enemies are to weak, but player is too strong. Think too that if player advantage is severely cutting down, Saracens army, instead of crusaders one, could be use with efficiency to storm player castle.
Good thing in the map is player have to build himself his defence, both army and fortification. Landscape itself is on the average, sometime I found it a bit empty, but overall it’s a fair job.
I was pleased to see a map which is, this one, a true invasion map : build your defence and resist. It’s a bit rare with fan made map, in invasion section at SH, where most maps are siege like, skirmish or mix, and lot of “offer” prebuilded castle and economy. In this map, even some building are present, about all is to do, and player is responsible for building his defence. Thanks for This Earlwill.
