A little good map
Playability : 5
It’s a very sympathic siege, enjoyable and short to play. Even I feel it was primary designed to be play as defender, and after, why not as attacker. It works in both situation, but at different difficult setting range however. The secret is to discover the difficulty setting which will push you on your limits. I was lucky to found it a the first attempt, which lead to frantic combat and short victory. Probably did it influence my review and rating.
Balance : 5
The map like I previously said works very well both in attack and defence. Or the author was luckly, or like I prefere imagine, I worked on his subject. Really little castle, with few or moderate troops both side are, imo, a key factor to achieve well balanced maps as attacker, and defender. I thing, the map would be played, for defender, in hardest level, from normal to very hard, depending of the player experience. As attacker, easy setting to normal seems the more adapted. Anyway, I would have prefer to see less narrow and unique way to assault the castle, especially as attacker… Because as defender such strategic advantage don’t worry lol ;).
However when player is attacker it cut him from options, and strategic choice.
PS : and hells with pitch especially when you are trapped in narrow way. But it’s a very personal view. I have few inclination for pitch :)
Map design : 4
However it’s a little 4. It’s above the average of usual siege map. In true rating scale, I think it would have average so 3 to average good (3.5… that not exist). Some work have been done from place to place, even separations between different height terrain is quite brutal, like if in this country erosion don’t exist. A fair portion of the map is empty flat meadow, and I feel trees are here to hide the misery. However a fair work, especially considering it's a siege map and author seams to begin as mapmaker. I would probably be less indulgent in the future.
Originality : 3
well nothing really original, except the author, resisted to ostentatious temptation, and deliver us a likeable little castle with a little garrison and a moderate company of assailants.
Story : 2
Nothing amazing here, it’s very short, and just enough to introduce the scenario. Really it’s the minimum to claim a story exist and don’t fall under a 1, usual deserved for no story at all.
In summary, this map was an excellent discovery, and a commendable achievement. Good job, with some points to work however.
If I can add something : lone outer towers are unuseful especially considering staircase open access to the top for enemies. You can argue the player could destroy these stair case. However here you incite player to destruction. His reaction could be to move troops from lone outer towers, to the more secure castle (especially the round tower), and destroy both outer towers and staircase to gain stone for future repair of the castle itself. It’s obvious that the outer tower offer no or very few strategical advantage over the castle, and are on an other hand vulnerable.
Played first time as defender and very hard setting : Last fight on the keep with feeling of short victory, even loose report lies this.
Second attempt as attackers and normal setting. Hard fight, short and bloody victory, high loose.
Played under Stronghold V1.2

I agree with Jalis about the map - this is fun little siege - nicely designed and perfeclty playable. There are no problems with the playability par on elittle bug which is where a few oftheir men are very keen to destroy the outer walls rather than go to the second gatehouse. They will continue to do this even sometimes once the last gatehouse has gone down. A minor flaw however. The game is very well balanced on normal and on one occasion even with this minor AI problem my lord was left with red health - what a victory! The map is very creative, simple yes but in a strong coastal position. Good work. Some of the surrounding map design i thought was a bit ordianry. however I liked the simple design of the Lookout - this is good stuff. However it is story and instructions that let you down - must have more than this! Your mark could really be improved if you had taken the time. Sorry about that. Overall this is a fun little siege equally in attacking and defending. Encouraging Stuff! |
