6412-6415 (904-907 AD). Leaving Iror’ in Kiev, Oleg attacked the Greeks. He took with him a multitude of Varangians (Vikings), Slavs, Chuds, Krivichians, Merians, Polyanians, Severians, Derevlians, Radimichians, Croats, Dulebians, and Tivercians, who are (all) pagans. All these tribes are known as Great Scythia by the Greeks. With the entire force, Oleg sallied forth by horse and by ship, and the number of his vessels was two thousand. He arrived before Tsar’grad (Constantinople), but the Greeks fortified the strain and closed up the city. Oleg disembarked upon the shore, and ordered his soldiers to beach the ships. They waged war around the city, and accomplished much slaughter of the Greeks. They also destroyed many places and burned the churches. Of the prisoners they captured, some they beheaded, some they tortured, some they shot, and still others they cast into the sea. The Russes inflicted many other woes upon the Greeks after the usual manner of soldier…..” (Nestor : Primary Russian Chronicles.)
Day 2 of the Rus attack up on the city: - “We saw them, coming from the east. The entire sea was covered with their ships. They came to wage war up on us, and rob us of our riches. We closed the strain, the only way in to the city from the sea. They made a great siege on them then. Destroying the small toll fortress and smashing their engines of war against the walls of our holiest of cities. Many good men died that day, I will pray for their souls. If it weren’t for our Greek fire, we would have been lost. Beaching their ships the Russes now march on foot and horse to put us to the sword. Emperor Leo has dispatched our remaining three legions and two garrisons to intercept and delay the Russes while the city prepares for a siege. Time is not our greatest ally. We have soaked the ground in oil, perhaps the fire that has served us so well the day before will do so again. These men know no God, if they break through they will slaughter us like animals. The defenses must hold at all costs………I can already hear their drums of war…….Oh Lord we need you now more then ever. Give us strength, in the name of the Holy Cross and the Holy and Indivisible Trinity of our one true God. ” ( monk Sasha of St. Mokios church. )
This is a defensive only siege. You are playing on the side of the Greeks trying to stop the army of Russes. Good Luck, enjoy, and feel free to post any comments on how I might improve this map.
THIS IS NOT A HISTORICAL MAP!!!! The city itself in entire creation of my imagination.
