Map Size: 200x200 (Small)
Difficulty: Hard
You will have to gather food and drink for the travelling fair that is soon in Bearley, a small hamlet in the northern princedoms of Humeria. However, as you gather resources, you will have to fight against, not bandits, but fires. Thefts will also lower your food supplies. The evil forces behind these acts are the priests of Bearley. The actual church of Bearley is not under your control but from within their lair, they hire your peasants to start fires and steal your food. Why? Because these fanatics do not want the travelling fair to come to town as it is against the rules of the church of Humeria. They have also hired a band of bandits to attack your town, but fortunately, these mercenaries won't arrive for a long time...

I think this map is a little harder than the normal rating listed here. It will take several restarts to even get to the point where your people stay at the castle. Once you get past the initial difficulties you will always have to fight plague, fires, theives, wolves, bears, etc. Then to make it even more different, you can't grow wheat. You must buy it, and one of the objectives is a lot of bread.

Even though it is difficult, the story, the design, was well planned and executed. It is a challenge.

Two things I think could be improved. First, there is almost no place you can build on the map, it is covered with trees. So building placement is very critical. Second, I always felt like I was trying to solve a puzzle. Knowing what to build when, and trying to balance money, wood stocks, food, etc. I felt like I had to follow certain steps almost exactly to be able to progress through the game. It is interesting, but detracts a little from the part I enjoy in Stronghold, building a castle.

Give it a try. I think you will find early in the scenario either you like it, or you will give up.

OK, so there are some "tricks" to winning this (even on easy setting) that make it interesting, but once you figure it out there is not much thought needed, just a good beaurocratic management of resources. Interesting but not re-playable, at least by me.
Benthos I had encountered many problems running this scenario that I had not encountered before, such as workers not taking jobs for buildings newly constructed, and workers not taking goods to the stores despite ther being space. Tricks I read in the forums, such as putting buildings to sleep then waking them did not fix the problems, so I gave up entirely.

This was a very difficult map to complete! It took me forever to get things going. I found it to be very difficult to grow fruit and raise cow for milk due to the land. I thought that it was an interesting twist to not allow the player to grow wheat or hops. I think that I would have added some more bandit attacks and a wolf attack or two. Overall, I had a great time playing this challenging map.
peter2008 This is a special scenario which really deserves the state of "hard". It is most confusing and thought-provoking at the start and exciting during its course.
You have to settle on a small-sized map, many parts of which are even not accessible due to a river and steep slopes. At first, most of the land is covered with trees. You may want to chop them away but there is no wood trading. Gold is scarce because you have to buy wheat and hops for some of the requests. And, above all, many fires threaten the village.
Scripting is not arbitrary, using a pre-set time but "flexible" replying to the player's style and skills. Well done.
You have to pack your buildings into the narrow spaces, perhaps with a well next to every valuable one.
It took me some attempts to figure out how open the mission actually is for diverse strategies. On very hard, I happily employed 66 people there.
