Mission 7: Greek Fire
Human Lord (2,000 gold) v Caliph 'The Scorpion', Caliph 'The Jackal' (both 4,000 gold)
This skirmish mission pits you against two enemy lords, or at least two versions of the Caliph. In addition to that, they have a larger pot of gold to start off with. The Caliph is notorious for sending lots of slaves to burn whatever they can. Bearing this in mind, I tried to concentrate my defences in a smallish area, and concentrated on arrow units to slay them.
To start off with, I placed three woodcutters' huts near to the oasis land which lies to the east of your keep. I wanted to concentrate on bread production here again, selling all food once my ale consumption was giving my popularity a +8 boost. There are outcrops of iron and stone north of your castle, and these could quite easily support mass weapons manufacture if you wanted to. I found the outcrop of stone near the keep to be more than sufficient, selling most of what I extracted.
Food early on was a few apple orchards, and I gradually increased wheat farms and based my food supply around this. However, to ensure I wasn't caught out by early attacks, I placed a large square tower and moat around the castle, then bought 20 bows at the marketplace. Having a good number of archers early on means you can control the attacks of both the Caliphs. I manufactured and bought bows and built up a heavy defence of my castle.
For attacking purposes, I tried to use Arabian units as a change. Assassins and horse archers would be my main method here, as well as a few catapults. Per previous walkthroughs when faced with the Caliph, you can get quite close to his castle and pummel his walls and towers. The first Caliph, just over the river to your west, was fairly easy to beat. The second Caliph required many more troops, as the walk up the slope was slow and there was only one real point of attack, which was heavily defended. I lost twice here by underestimating the strength of the Caliph's defences and opted to mix up a few European troops with the horse archers and assassins. Generating large amounts of gold here won't be a problem, thereby supporting any mercenary troops you may wish to buy. |

Sir Launcelaut,
Thanks for the strategy hint, but why make it harder than it has to be. It's much easier to hire the Arabian Swordsmen as soon as the map starts and kill both of them.
I love long drawn out battles, but this map is not good for that. Kill them quickly and be done with it. Victory!

Crypts,
You don't kill them both quickly because all your arabian swordsmen will die before they reach the Jackal. It takes a while to make enough crossbowmen to get to the walls so build a small gatehouse on your side of the ford. then stretch a small amout of walls just enough to where the enemy cant get in and fill that up first. then when you have about 50 crossbowmen, send them up on to your walls or tower or gatehouse farthest to where he gathers his troops. Keep doing this and you will have a great time watching all the Jackal's people die.
P.S. I also like long battles[Edited on 01/26/07 @ 07:15 PM]

Sir Launcelaut,
I only lost like 5 men on the first Caliph attack.
The 2nd one was a bit more challenging, and I lost some men, but still won with men to spare. Lost maybe 30 men to both battles. So, not too bad I'd say for rushing it.
But yeah, long battles rock. It's cool to build a nice castle, and enjoy the map.
My favorite way to defend is many round towers housed with Balistae and Crossbowmen. Not much can get through. The Balistae take out the siege equipment very quickly and the Crossbowmen cut through the archers and swordsmen like a hot knife through butter; it's great.
I also love using Knights to rush farms, siege equipment, and just terrorize the neighborhood. Heh heh.
You know what I wish? If Knights could dismount, turn into like a swordsman and enter the keep. That would be so cool! I have killed the lords with Knights before however. Sometimes the lords come down or get trapped in the doorway, especially if you're hammering the Lord with archers or crossbow. Then the Knights have a hayday! :)

Crypts,
My point is you have all that land that the Caliph can't touch on the other side of the ford. It's fun to get like, 15 iron mines to the north. Of course it's far away, but since this is one of my favorite levels, I just put the game speed up to 90 and make fear factor go up.
And thanks for writing or um typing back to me.
The rush thing never works for me. But after a while this level got boring and I moved on. Back when I had very little expeirience, I was so intimidated by this level because I could hardly take on 1 Caliph.Eventually I got better and beat every level up to the Land of Palms. I got stuck there so I asked my cousin how he beat it. He was the one who got me on this game. That was also I knew about this website. A BUTTLOAD of help he was. NOT!!! So eventually I beat it but it took me an entire day to beat Saladin. On that level I built up such a big castle it wasn't even funny.

on this level defense is so simple ..........wall of the ford where they cross at and put a tower there some pitch traps in front of the wall a large tower with a ballistae on top some archers and your done ......now you can concentrate on building up you economy in order to crush them....
note-you might want to wall of the front of your stone so it is not repeadetly destroyed....also dont even bother building a gatehouse until youre positive you can crush the caliphs |

caliph is pretty easy to kill...all i do is make him burn himself to death :D
you can do this to anyone who has fire throwers..
make a ox teather inside their castle and when the ox shows up the fire thorower burns it and starts a fire inside his castle..i just keep adding in teathers and then when the fire gets to his peasent resawn point it kills them all and the fire stays there for a while..
EASY AS PIE
i love apple pie :P |

Place Granary, Dairy Farms (3), quarry, 2 ox tethers, and mercenary post. build 10-15 Arab Swordsmen and destroy the Caliph that is across the river from you. Once he's dead you should have more gold to use. Build 2 woodcutters, market, and barracks, and armory. Build a gatehouse (small) next to the stone. build a wall all the way down to the edge of the map. then enclose your keep ( also enclose the farmland). build 2 fletchers 1 making crossbows and the other makin bows. line the walls with archers and crossbowmen. Build a square tower and put ballista. put 20~25 archers in the tower with a brazier. that should keep out the slaves. Put some crossbowmen (15~20 should do) in the tower. later, add more quarries with ox tethers and add poleturner making pikes and armorer. build 2 iron mines on the ore with is up north. protect it with 5 archers, 5 crossbowmen, and 2 or 3 Arab swordsmen set on defensive stance. slowly build up an attacking force and when your ready, go up the hill and kcik the **** out of that annoying Caliph |

I really like this map;
1-You can easly place 4-6 round or squire towers by the ford on the side of the Caliphs with 4-6 mangonels (later balistas) to defend your castle.
2-Have fun with the attacks of the orange Caliph.
3-Easly kill the yellow Caliphafter using 4-6 mangonels and some horse archers.
4-Shut down the orange Caliphs' pitch with a tower on your side of the river.
5-Get a realy good economy with the wood, stone, iron (a little to the north of the map is a lot of iron), bread.
6-Siege the orange Caliph with catapults, trebuchets, arachers, crosbowmen and whatever you like.
7-Build up a realy good devence against the Caliph. |

It's easy to win. Just use all your gold to build assassins and kill the first caliph. Then pull back and focus on bow and crossbow production.Food is your choice. For the final assault I used 20 fire ballista, 200 archers, 75 crossbowmen, and 1 catapult. I then sent the fire ballista up the hill. Once they're in position I sent my archers in. By this time the catapult tore a hole in the all and every body but caliph was dead. My soldiers rushed in the keep and killed the caliph.
Arabian lords should use 200 horse archers and a dozen assassins for the final assault on the caliph. Circle the caliphs castle kill everyone and use assassins to kill the caliph.
All in all a easy mission.
have fun,
Lord Stonewall
