Mission 9: The Oasis
Human Lord (2,000 gold) v Saladin 'The Wise' (2,000 gold)
Facing Saladin on a one-on-one battle is something to relish. He is one of the better AI lords and builds well defended castles, difficult to get near to, let alone inside the walls. This map allows you some time to build up both your defences as well as an attacking force though, and as a result there shouldn't be too much of a problem in defeating him.
From the starting goods, I immediately placed 4 woodcutters' huts, 2 apple orchards, 1 dairy farm, one iron mine and 2 stone quarries. The marketplace was also sited early on and I bought some more wood, placed a hovel and prepared to expand the settlement quickly. I also placed two round towers where I assumed the attacking path would be. They were well away from the keep and manned with ballista, as Saladin does like to use catapults in his attacks. I also bought leather armour and crossbows, as well as a few normal bows and recruited some soldiers to defend the castle. They were all placed on top of the round towers. Just as well, as Saladin started his early attacks with horse archers. They can be difficult to track due to their ability to run and shoot at the same time.
To generate gold, I hoisted taxes by +20. With a fairly large population it doesn't take too long to build up the coffers. I decided to place a chapel, church and cathedral to get a +8 boost to popularity via religious coverage, +8 via full ale coverage and enough 'good things' to increase popularity a further +5. Whilst production slows down, I felt I needed a defensive boost for my attacks.
In this mission, I only walled off the front of the castle, preferring to dig a moat around the back and sides of my fortification. It was more than enough. As well as weapons manufacture, I bought leather armour, crossbows, metal armour and swords when funds allowed. The attacking force here would be a mixture of crossbowmen, swordsmen, catapults and some fire ballistas as backup. These can be very useful if you are able to set fire to the interior of a castle, as they can wreak havoc by not only burning buildings, but by killing peasants and enemy troops gathered around Saladin's campfire.
In order to get close enough to Saladin, I used crossbowmen to take out the ballista on his round towers. Then, with catapults able to get in range without being destroyed, I pummelled the round towers to the 'ruined' state, which means that the AI cannot build replacements... handy, and a good way of crippling the castle's defences. Crossbowmen moved in again and were able to fire freely at anything that moved. At the same time, I took the swordsmen and hacked my way through the walls, and then on to Saladin himself.
My attacking force consisted of 100 crossbowmen, 60 swordsmen, 5 catapults and 5 fire ballista. Once again, this was a bit of overkill and you won't need as many as this. Some 20 swordsmen and 50 crossbowmen may well be enough.

Hey there,
Actually this was an easy mission for me. I've done this level several times and I found that the harras technique is the best way to go on this one.
Here's how it works:
I started by placing 3 quarries, 6 woodcutter's huts, 2 hops farms, +/- 8 apple farms, 2 dairy farms, 3 iron mines, 3 breweries, 2 inns and some weapon buildings to build pikemen and crossbow archers. As soon as the inns are up and running you could turn off the granary to sell the food for gold.
When money allows train 15 horse archers and kill the farmers/archers. At this time Saladin shouldn't have that much archers.
By this time you should have enough money to build at least 5 fire ballistae, +/- 10 pikemen, +/- 10 crossbowmen, some more horse archers and a siege tower.
With the ballistae taking down the archers I put my crossbowmen on the towers, using the siege tower. Note that the enemy will try to kill your crossbowmen with his swordmen so it's a good idea to put the pikemen in front ;).
At this point Saladin can't do a thing when he's under constant fire of your crossbowmen. So recruit some more pikemen and kill him :).

I was Crushed the first time with 120 Macemans, 70 crosbows, 8 trebuchets and 3 fire balista's
But i found a fairly easy way, just make 10 trebuchets far from his castle, but just in range.
His onagers won't hurt you, and you can destroy the towers. Now move the crosbowmans very close to his castle, and let them shoot. Finnaly, make som siege towers and move your macemans up that wall. Now your pretty done with him. |

Well for this mission it took me ten minutes to complete. yes, RUSH tatics :D. at the start place your granary, 2 hovels, a merc post and a market. then buy 20 some horse archers and get to saladins keep asap. keep a close eye on your horse archers after u kill all his archers or his swordsman will kill off the horse archers. once you eliminate all his forces, take eleven assassins and finish the lord. i was left with 7 assassins and 19 horse archers. NOTE: I killed ALL his troops with my horse archers before i sent in my assassins. hope this helped someone out |

This is one of my favourite missions, and I always take my time. I make sure my stronghold is secure (sometimes tricky when he knocks out a tower ballistra and I don't notice - whoops!) but I love building up a force of knights and systematically take out his farms etc. Particularly his hovels, because he likes building them outside the walls. Sometimes you can get him to set fire to one and then get your knights to race round the tower to ensure his gates close. The he can't get out for a while to put the fire out.
This is for people who really, really don't like rushing. If you keep attacking his woodsmen, the trees start to grow back over the oasis and he will run out of space for all the farms he needs. But that's only if you want the game to continue for a while..... |
