ARUNDEL CASTLE - 1302
(Winner of SHH Historic Castle Design Competition)
Story:
Edmund Fitzalan, 2nd Earl of Arundel (your father) was falsely accused of treason and rebellion against King Edward II. He was beheaded without a trial and the castle passed to the Earl of Kent (the Snake). As fate would have it, the truth was revealed and your father was exhonorated. The King has ordered the execution of the snake and has commissioned you (Richard Fitzalan) to lead a force to reclaim your birthright as 3rd Earl of Arundel. The Snake doesn’t intend to surrender without a fight. Even if you succeed in reclaiming the castle, he will defiantly oppose you until the king’s justice is pronounced upon his wicked body.
The King has granted you the right to hold fairs in order to collect the revenue and materials required of you as payment for granting you this opportunity. You have thirty years to reclaim the caslte and achieve his majesty’s objectives. Be prepared, your enemy isnt called “The Snake” for nothing!
Victory Objectives:
Capture the Castle
10000 Gold
100 Population
200 Bread
200 Fruit
30 Swords
30 Metal Armor
Time limit of 30 game years
***Player notes – Please Read***
This is a ‘cede castle’ scenario in which the clock starts ticking the moment you begin. You have limited time to take the castle and achieve your objective (30 game years). This is another “epic” scenario that will hopefully challenge your playing ability but not frustrate you into dispair. Regardless of the daunting economic goals, victory is achievable!
*** If destroyed, the mills can not be replaced – you must protect them.
Helpful Hints:
As the phasing player (green), you must capture the castle as quickly as possible. The enemy will try to break the siege and hamper your efforts – this is one of the inovative features of this scenario. You must plan your attack wisely and strike with accuracy – take advantage of the siege engines provided. If you time your assault properly, it is possible to complete the siege while only sustaining about 25% casualties. Be fore warned that there are some deceptive ‘traps’ designed into the castle’s defenses and if you take the bait, you are in for a rough day!
This project has been a joint effort between Brave Sir Robin and myself. Our goal was to try some new and interesting concepts not yet seen in Stronghold. I hope you enjoy playing this scenario as much as we have enjoyed creating it. As always, I welcome constructive critisism and comments from players. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments or suggestions.
Happy Gaming!
James,
Duke of York
Arundel Castle was ordered constructed on Christmas Day 1067 by William the Conqueror. Its original construction was a wooden mote and bailey style castle, which was upgrated to stone over the next several centuries. We tried to recreate the castle as it might have appeared in the 13th century. The story and characters named above are historic with a few minor liberties added to adapt for game play.

I can see how you won the contest. You must be congratulated on such a great map. You put alot of effort to make it as close to the real thing as possible and it's a brilliant result. Nearly a perfect mark but because i finished it on my first go i had to give you a 4 for balance. It isn't a map you can get bored of easily. i could play the map again and still enjoy it, it's addictive and attractive. It is a very complex design and the terrain is also of great standard. Your story was a great way to introduce your map and it was very well written. 4.8 is the highest score i have given so once again Congratulations!

Briliant! It is IMHO very hard map. I succeed on 2nd attempt - normal level. Maybe I had a bad siege and defence strategy, overall losts at the end about 54%. Very good balanced, in every step some surprises in negative sence (imposibble build crossbowmen, trade stones, lack of wood, very long delivery distances, enormous effort to get some oil, etc.) 30 Years of perfect gaming, no one second of boring. But I am happy, that it is over. :-) Thank You! |

Playability: 5
This is defiantly one of the funniest and most enjoyable maps ever to be posted at SH. Great all the way through.
Balance: 4
Way above my skill, but I'm far from the best of players, so I'm giving this a 4.
Creativity: 5
The map features many new things that I had not seen before I played this map (it was quite a while ago since I downloaded the map), and the map makers have done best work of what has been available to them, and actually, all cede-castle scenarios deserves a 5 :P
Map Design: 5
Great, simply...but what else is to expect when Duke of York and Brave sir Robin do a map together.
Story/Instructions: 5
Could have been more detailed and deep-going, but indeed well written, and there's no need to reduse the score of such an excellent map.
Additional Comments:
Beautiful work!
