Known as the "Castle In The Clouds", Taillebourg was a powerful french fortress on the river Charente, near the town of Saintes. Considered impregnable when constructed (what castle wasn't), it was perched high on a craggy rock that could be attacked from only one side. Taillebourg decided to revolt against the Angevin ruler Henry II in 1179, who instructed his son Richard (the Lionheart) to halt the insurrection, and besiege the castle with the "cloud-tipped towers"...

This is a siege scenario, so you may attack and destroy Taillebourg as Richard, or change history by successfully defending the castle and defeat him. Because it was so completely demolished, little is known of the castle other than its intimidating height, so this simulation takes some liberties with its design, but attempts to make it as challenging a siege as possible.

There is a .doc readme, if you think I should include a .txt as well, please let know, and of course, any other constructive criticism is welcome.

Before I get into the review - yes - include .txt files!! You can't read .doc files from WinZip, but you can read .txt files from WinZip (why unzip anything you don't have to?)

Ok...on to the map.

Since you invite play from both sides...

ATTACKER: All those towers and siege engines LOOK intimidating, but fear not - they can't fire fast enough to make a difference. After blasting everything I could with my trebuchets, I... well, I 'll let everyone figure out their own strategy, but suffice it to say - the Castle was mine with only 13% losses.

DEFENDER: More challenging play here. Unlike many defenses, I was forced to take an active role and reposition my troops a few times. I saved the Castle with 51% losses. Some swordsmen made it to the Keep door, but I had defenders ready to pounce on them there. They never would have made it close, but I guessed wrong on which side to position some oilmen and when the swordsmen went the other way, I had to rely on hand to hand combat to keep them out of the Keep. NOTE TO OTHER PLAYERS: I never used them, but don't overlook the monks at the rear of the map. They could well help turn the tide in your defense.

Overall, a pretty map and fun play as the defender!

Thanks for your review Lord Malibar, I used the .doc to make it more interesting, but of course, there are size and compatibility drawbacks. Thought I would see how it went over with people before adding another file, but I'll go ahead and update it with a .txt file. My Winzip reads .docs just fine, so that was unexpected, but as I said, I'm sure there are OS/Winzip combos that don't. Since the storyline was that Richard attacked with almost no siege equipment, I set it up with minimal resources, but left it flexible for those that want to experiment with 'what ifs'. I'm glad you noticed the monks, that was exactly how I designed them to be used, they were there as a kind of last stand. Glad you had fun with it, I know I have, that's why I wanted to share it.
Lord Malibar Yes, it was weird. I could have sworn I've read doc files in previous versions on WinZip, but for some reason, I couldn't read this one. No matter...I didn't subtract for that = )
