Yes another Helms Deep map. ;)
Ive seen alot of Helms deep maps on st heaven but i decided to releasse my own version. (except for the mountain design I stole that from another map)
This map is pretty hard, even on easy and normal its pretty challenging. Ive included a huge rohirrim charge of 250 men and believe me your gonna need them they will be available some where around november 1087. Ive included 2 .txt files, a readme and some Hint&tips. I hope you guys like the map and plz leave some comments on how i can improve my map and plz report if encounter any bugs
Quite a rush when I began to play this version of Helm's Deep. Immediately, within the first month, I faced two large groups of enemy forces attacking my defenses. One group with two siege towers was approaching the Deeping wall and another with two rams was coming up the ramp to the main gate. I had very little time to react.
I had to restart the game, maybe 3 or 4 time within the first few months while I took in the opening positions, structure of my fortifications and distribution of the defending forces.
After these early restarts I was able to play the game through to victory though I had to closely follow the battle and continually reposition my units. Near the end I noticed that the rohirrim (250 knights locked in behind a stone wall) had freed themselves and I could bring them into the battle although I was doing pretty well by that time and I think I might have won without their help.
Quite interesting to be able to command 250 knights to attack - but it was no contest, they completely overwhelmed the remaining enemy units. Balance - 4, Playability - 4
The map provides a suitable terrain for a Helm's Deep map but overall was rather plain with many broad unused areas of fairly uniform appearance, especially the large "mountain" area. The map had an artificial look and would benefit from more terrain shaping, rock outcroppings, erosion features, etc. Probably this designer also could have gotten by with a smaller map, perhaps 300x300. Map Design - 2.5
Helm's Deep has been done many times before. It is a "classic" siege from Lord of the Rings and there are many images and maps of this battle. So it takes something rather special and new to achieve a high creativity score. The method of locking up the knights in the early part of the game has been used by NAT in their Minas Tirith and by others. Yet this is a good start for a new designer. Nice castle with some attractive stonework. Creativity - 3
The Story gives background from the Lord of the Rings and a small hints file is included with the download. Story - 3
Knight-Seawolf - this is a good start at map design. I recommend you spend more time developing the map terrain to give your designs a proper and realistic setting. I enjoyed the quick start of this map but overall I would say it was too easy. It is helpful to ask other Stronghold designers to "playtest" your map before you upload it. If you look in the forum you will see topics about this.
Not quite sure what you mean by your comment that you "stole" the mountain design from another map. We all borrow and learn from on another. But it is helpful and appreciated if you give credit for specific ideas or designs that you "borrow." Maybe tell the designer's name and the particular map.
I liked the way you brought so many units into the action in this scenario.
