I did not download this map just because it said "helms deep," of which there have been a great number of scenarios based around, but because Nogolds previous helms deep maps have provided something different. In this respect I wasn't dissaponited, as there was more than just a massive attack on a movie look-alike castle, with economic goals added in as well. The castle looks nothing like it does in the film, and seems to be made mostly out of the authors imagination and from descriptions in the story. Therefore I award a 4 for creativity.
Then I run into problems:
I played on hard, and won easily. The enemy only has to get through 1 gatehouse and some moat, then can waltz up to your castle. Since the enemy only attacks this area (its the weakest point) all I had to do was pile all my swodsmen (just under 300!) in front of the gatehouse, and stick all my archers on the gatehouses themselves. The enemy attacks didn't stand a chance. From an economical view, the only real challenge was to delete all the farms and buildings on the valley floor, manually cram as many wheat, cheese and hop farms in as possible, then sit back and watch. The only thing that saves balance from being one, is the sporadic fires and plagues. Balance-2
The map was designed to a fair standard, with an intersting shaped castle. Map Design-3
The story was a good length, and thoroughly explained the background of Helms Deep, but didn't go into great detail. Story-3
As you can see from the review, this would be a good map, where it not for the excessive amount of starting units.

Nice map from Nogold especially if you like big sieges. I played the map on Normal and won (but only just). The map is designed to an adequate standard, not too accurate to the real thing but recognisable and a map not without it's own charm. In playing I did not gather all my men together at one area as Jax Omen did but still achieved victory. I did have some epic moments on the large stone staircases with my macemen and swordsmen pouring down to meet the attackers. That was a lot of fun! I wasn't quite sure about having eco golas on a Helms Deep map - that certainly something different! The design as I said was generally good, fine countryside outside the walls and good solid stonework. Not too accurate to the real thing but it didn't matter too much. I really forgot that I was playing a 'Helms Deep' anyway. Storyline fine again, an average amount suplied by the author and worth the 3 quite comfortably. Overall a fun and large scale Helms Deep from nogold. Good work!
