Kings Vale

Author File Description
File Details
Map Size: 300x300 (Medium)
Difficulty: Hard
This is my first map, so the balance may be slightly off. The basic story is that King's Vale, a small town based around river trade, is under attack by a far superior force. The local lord (you) has been called in to help defend the town. Most of your troops are villagers who have armed themselves with what weapons they have (bows and spears and maces), along with a few of the lord's "elite" guard (knights, swordsmen, pikemen, and a force of crossbowmen). Use the defences provided and your archers to whittle down the number of enemies. A word of warning: most of your men are not in position when the scenario starts, as they have run to get what weapons they can. You have precious little time to reposition them, too, as the enemy starts attacking as soon as the map loads. Apart from that, good luck and enjoy the game!

Well, this is your first map, and I will say this: You have some promising talent. Just needs a little refinement. So I hope you will take this as a constructive informative review, as it is intended.

Playability: 3
The map plays out well, and there are no glitches. But there really is not much of a challenge (See Balance) and so the intention of the design(to draw out the battle in a 'defend and fall back' mode) is lost. Most of this is not your fault, and experience in designing will help you to avoid these mistakes.

Balance: 3
The AI really kills your map. The enemy comes in groups, instead of one full rush, which would have made this a much tougher proposition! I'm not sure if it is the location of the signpost, or the presence of so many gates that is causing the problems.

Creativity: 4
I give a four here because I really liked the whole idea behind the map. The long, and winding path to the castle, the many obstacles to whittle down the enemy, the idea is good. The fact of the map's failures does not take away from the goodness of the idea.

Map Design: 3
I want you to understand why I gave this score. The map itself (and its features) are not bad. They are just a little rough around the edges. The use of the equalizing terrain button on the sections of different terrain would give the terrain shifts a more natural feel and look. Also, the rocks and such were a little heavy in some places. Need to use a little smaller "brush" in some areas when sculpting terrain and features.

Story/Instructions: 3
The in-map story is okay. Please, add a full story to the description page! It adds so much to a download, and if ratings mean anything to you, you won't get higher than a 3 in this category from the respected reviewers without one. Also, a minimap (while not mandatory or effecting the review) would be a nice touch, as well.

Overall, you've got the talent to make good maps. I think you just need to download a few of the maps from some of the more experienced designers who get those 4+ ratings, and refine your craft a little, and you'll be well on way to making great maps in no time!

Nice Effort!

Thanks for your review! In truth, I expected to fare much worse on this map. The problem with the AI has me flummoxed... I'm not quite sure how to deal with it. Previously in this scenario, the AI would just stop after the first few gates. I'll see if I can fix it up. As for map design.. well, in this case, I wasn't really concentrating on it. I guess I should more in future. And story.. first time I uploaded it, I put in a long descriptive story... but the upload failed for some reason (I think due to the ' in King's Vale)... and I didn't have time to retype the story. Thanks for your review!
