Battle of Evermore
Story
By King Matthew I and King Nick the Nut
With reports coming in that the Rat, Snake, Pig, and Wolf have formed an alliance in order to conquer his newly acquired land the King has sent out a royal decree with a phrase that particularly attracts you, “No Experience Necessary.” Having just graduated from the Famous Adventurer’s Correspondence School for Heroes this was your chance to prove your worth!
You arrived in Evermore valley just before the passes were cut off by a late spring snow. The job seemed straightforward enough. They just needed you to oversee the construction of a new castle to defend the new land. Unfortunately, the decree was just a tad bit of an understatement. It had said that you were needed to dispatch some “trouble makers” that had been causing some “minor problems” in the kingdom. Eventually you learned of the dire situation in Evermore from one of your scribes. Now you were stuck in an area were you are surrounded by huge armies of your adversaries and wild animals are abound. Maybe you didn’t want to be a hero after all. But the gigantic amount of gold the King had promised you lingered in your head. There was only one thing left for you to do - roll up your sleeves, pull your pants up and go medieval on all their butts.
Thanks to WarLord_Designs for telling me about the glitch and how to fix it.
Also this is the only version of the game that works correctly. If you downloaded any other versions get this one, it actually works.

There is a problem with invasions on this map,
they are set to repeat and are not set to turn off at all so they never stop.
I have emailed the Designer about the issue.

A nice map, although it does lack a little spice and is a tad long.
Playability: 3
Map plays fine, and I had no trouble beating it on normal, minimal difficulty on hard. But the map is a little too drawn out, with no events to keep the player occupied while waiting fo the invasions (besides the wolves, which were pesky). Need to throw a plague or fire or two in the mix, or some bandits, just to keep things interesting.
Balance: 3
Not much to do except fight off some wolves and build your forces while waiting for the invasions. Some varied eco goals to go along with disaster events (as mentioned above) would liven things up considrably, and improve the balance by far.
Creativity: 4
I liked the setting, and there were some nice features to the story and map. The author shows a creative talent, just needs some fine tuning and some more experience.
Map Design: 3
The map itself is okay, but the features are for the most part kind of bland, and painted with an overly simplistic brush. Could have eliminated the middle signpost and your resources (iron and stone) are a little unrealistic in appearance. The skills are ther, just need to work on your craft a little more.
Story/Instructions: 4
Good story (needs a minimap) all around, safe 4. Little more elaboration and maybe a text file in the download would be a thought for next time.
All in all, a promising designer with good skills who just needs to learn a little more about map design and add some scripted events. But all the tools are there. Keep on working at it and getting better! |

I like this scenario.
Playability is pretty good. Set-up is workable, everything you need is there, though some is harder to get than others, and the map size and multiple signposts help too. There are only really 2 kinds of problems...wolves (and bears, at the start) and armies. You could spice it up a little and make it a little less predictable. It is also a bit long. cutting out one of the mid battles (the 2nd or 3rd attack) would probably improve the game overall...it starts to get tiresome towards the end.
Your scribe stopping you in a battle to say "animal tracks have been spotted" or "The wolves are on the prowl" also gets annoying the 3rd or 4th time.
Balance is good, it took me twice to win on normal, have to use pretty much all the resources you're granted to do it, so not too easy or too hard.
Fairly creative on story and map, but room for improvement, especially on the map.
Map design is good for the fighting, but not so appealing to the eye. The waterfall, the island shrine, and the river on the right were nice touches, keep with that. Make your hills and resources a little smoother & more believable, for example. The trees were good though...blending from one type to another, nice.
I don't know about those deer stuck in the middle of the river though. ;-)
The story was good...believable, creative, and to the point. There was something about a "mountain pass" or something that didn't quite match with the map topography...but details, details...good job.
Thank you for sharing this map. |
