The Lord of the Marches is a hybrid invasion/economic mission. The goals are strictly economic but the action is definitely military. The complete story is found in the zip file. In essence, however, you have just been given a large border province to pacify and turn into a profitable region. The natives are unfriendly and your neighbor mounts several invasions. The goals are centered around the collection of iron and stone. This would simple except that the terrain is extremely hilly and difficult to defend from the bandits and invasions that seem to target your mines. You do have a simple square castle and several forts, you will need them. To complicate things your principle weapons are bows, crossbows and spears. I am not sadistic and this definitely a winnable mission but, hopefully one with some challenges. Von Kamstra

The Lord of the Marches

This is a classic nice “ecovasion”, where you have to fulfil huge amounts of gold, iron, stones, and population. Your pre-built keep, surrounded by a square fortification, constructed of walls and towers, is located in the southwestern areas of the map. Inside of it there’s enough space to expand your economy. North of it, there are two small forts which are near the northern hills, where the enemy will start his assaults. However, here you will find the scattered resources of stone and iron, necessary to reach the high goals. However, there is my first suggestion concerning the economic objectives: It is also possible to achieve the demanded commodities by buying iron and stone completely in the market; so it doesn’t matter, if some quarries or iron mines should be destroyed from time to time. I personally think, in relation to a thrill challenge, it ought to be better to cancel these trade options. An additional time limit would bring a further time pressure.
Map Design is well done, but not spectacular. Overall quite naturalistic, but the spring waters need more detail work, in my opinion. There are extensive plains, well-arable land, which you can use almost without risk. A well-functioning food supply will guarantee a prosperous development with a stable high popularity for the future. Regular fairs will fill your treasury chambers for various military projects.
On the military side, I’ve noticed a little imbalance to the player’s advantage:
Your initial strength of troops is sufficient to resist the first attacks without any higher injuries. The regular welcome reinforcements of archers (every 12 months) assist you to build up your military forces easier. So you can concentrate on mustering just crossbowmen for a strong defence to withstand the increasing invasions. If you are sending your main forces to the two northern forts, your strategic work will be done. Now you can watch your troops killing the approaching enemy without any further military actions needed.
I guess, a well-playable map, but the handling of it subjectively is a little bit too easy. Nevertheless, a very nice civilian life will expect you, when over 120 peasants fill your fortification with life and busily walk through your castle like ants.
