A NATURAL DEFENCE
As an expeditionary force to the island of Arranti Minor never returned, the king has decided that you shall lead another force to the island, and try to set up a community. He expects you to fulfil your objectives, in time for him to enjoy a safe visit in the Autumn of 1145. On your arrival, you find your force being harried by savages and animals more vicious than you have previously encountered, and you are forced to flee. You happen upon a natural feature of the landscape, that the previous expedition had obviously used to make into a fortification, and in desperation, begin to rebuild its defences. The king will still expect you to complete your quest, therefore, against the odds, your party begin production of the goods in preperation for his Majesties visit.
This is my second Map. I freely admit to being no expert designer, but hope you enjoy my meagre efforts.

This turned out to be quite a challenging map! After losing four times on Normal, I switched to Easy... and still lost. The events of 1144/1145 come so fast and furious (and so close to the end) that there's no recovering from them. On Easy I almost made it - I had everything I needed but the last bit of gold, and there wouldn't have been a problem getting that. But then the bandits came and destroyed everything, and killed most of the population too, and there wasn't enough time to recover from that. (And yes, I did try walling off the bridge to keep the bandits away!). I'm giving a 3 for balance, because it was just so hard.
Playability, though, is a 4, because even though I didn't win, there were a lot of elements that contributed to it being a fun game to play. First, the challenge of it (even though that seems a contradiction). And second, I liked the placement of the signpost, the land bridge and the keep, and all of the implications for gameplay.
Creativity is a 3.5 - I'll round up to 4 given the elements I mentioned in the playability section.
Map design: 3, mostly because there were a lot of squared off areas that could have been blended in better. I enjoy seeing what map designers can do with the tiny maps - lots of neat land features in this one.
Story/Instructions: 4 - good job with the story!
Nice little map with quite a challenge!
I liked this game about as much as Kester did, although I wasn't quite as challenged by it. My enjoyment came from winning it at Very Hard, which believe me is NOT easy to do. I managed this feat with ZERO months to spare, and trust me, as I waited for the final month to tick, I wasn't sure whether I'd be told I had a Victory or a Defeat. I could probably improve on that a little, but my head hurts.
Playability and balance reflect the just-barely nature of a VH win.
Creativity & map design are average. The signpost area is all too easily blocked; the challenge in this one is purely economic, with the race against time your biggest problem.
All in all, a very decent effort by a novice mapcrafter. Some additional events could make it better, but there are enough distractions as it is to make this one a minor obsession.
