I have played through "At War With In" four times. Three times on NORMAL and I lost every time. Put up a good fight, I believe, but was overpowered by the huge quantities of invading forces, especially the pikemen and swordsmen. The one time I played on EASY I won by a pretty good margin with the enemy not even breaching the final gate.
Smellyrat has designed a good castle here which offers many layers of defense. The key to winning (or at least holding out as long as possible) comes from keeping the archers in forward positions where they can do the most damage but then pulling them back at the last minute before they are overrun - an ongoing challenge with this map. I would judge it to be a tad too hard for the average player (like me). A better player could perhaps win on NORMAL.
Although this is an invasion, the economy is not really an issue with this map. You can make additional swordsmen from existing weapons in the armory but that's about all. It is a straightforward battle. Playability - 5, Balance - 4
The castle is a good design and invaders coming "through the front door" must overcome two moats and four gates to reach the keep. No unusual eye candy but the towers are well placed and I liked the tower and wall system around the central keep. Overall it is well thought out. There are several groups of "out buildings" and fortified points but these do not affect the battle. Creativity - 4
The story is well written but short. It does give the setting for the battle and names the major players. Story - 3
I would say the designer put most of his effort into the castle and structures but laid out the terrain very quickly. Most of landscape is unadorned low level green. The river (moat) running across the map has no shoreline features that would give it a natural appearance. The few hills and sprinkling of trees also look artificial. Items such as rocks and plants were not utilized at all. Map Design - 2.
Have a go at this map by a relatively new designer to SHH.
My advice to smellyrat is to put more effort into landscaping and story writing. You may also want to request help from other designers to playtest your map. (In the Map Design section of the Forum.)
