Only now is Caerphilly's true stature becoming widely recognised. The world is waking up to the presence of this massive "Sleeping Giant" of a castle. It's location is totally unexpected. Surrounded by shops, offices and houses, it effortlessly dominates the town of Caerphilly. The fortress sprawls over 30 acres, making it easily the biggest castle in Wales and, along with Windsor and Dover, the largest in Britain.
The castle was built in the late 13th century by the Anglo-Norman lord, Gilbert de Clare to consolidate his grip on the lands he had captured. The fortress impressed onlookers right from the start, an awe struck Welsh poet describing it as "giant Caerffili". De Clare's castle, a high point in medieval military architecture, is a supreme example of the concentric "walls within walls" system of defence.

An intersting map by Lord Thingol.
This map contains a fairly solid castle, and is faced by hordes of oncoming enemies. This sounds kind of fun, but the core of the game involves positioning your men on the wall, which takes a few minutes and then watching the fight. As the only access to your walls is via gatehouses, you never have to retreat your men. However, being able to build everything except new men means you can experimetn with pitch and killing pits and the like, which is kinda fun.
The map is badly flawed here. On the first go on normal, I built nothing new, and watched the enemy get slaughtered by my crossbowmen. On second plays, I filled the area in front of the gatehouse repeatedly with pitch, taking out 100 swordsmen at once. Deleting the bridge gatehouse leaves the enemy stumped. With all the stone, I could delete the bridge, and fill it with wall. Also, putting moat down stumps the AI as the macemen and spearmen are easily dispatched.
Nothing new, but nothing bad. A straightforward invasion.
Relativly simple map design, which looks ok. I thought the castle looked very good, however, but not quite enough to warrant a 4.
I might be criticised here, but though the story was short, it seemed well researched.
This map has problems in Playabiltiy and Balance areas, as yyou can see. Simply adding steps to the castle, lowering starting troops, and stopping the player from building so much would solve these easily, and probably raise the score to 3.6.
Apart from that, a decent enough invasion from Lord Thingol.
