Well, I must say that this map was not easy to make and took me quite a while. It is not entirely based on the descriptions from the book or the Minas Tirith from the movies. The city has only 4 rings as the maps in the Stronghold are a bit small

You'll start off with most of your troops scattered throughout the city and not on the walls so you'll have to move quickly to get them all in place. This map may seem a bit daunting at first but is very beatable so don't get discouraged

Also, my map has no Ride of Rohirrim as I will be making a Pelennor Fields map where you will be in control of large forces of melee units

NOTE: Changing the difficulty level makes very little difference as this is a siege map with scripted invasions.

v1.1 UPDATE: The balance was tweaked a bit and I realized that there were no braziers to light the pitch ditches in front of the gate to the citadel so that was fixed as well.

v1.2 UPDATE: Minor tweaks to the invasions and now the city is populated with working peasants making the map more interesting. It used to cause lag but for some reason it doesn't anymore.

v1.3 UPDATE: If I had made a separate update thing for every time I tweaked this map there would probably be over a dozen. I have submitted slightly tweaked versions of this map a ridiculous number of times since I keep finding small problems with it. Anyways this is the latest and most refined version with all the modifications and everything. The first wave of troops has been altered a bit and little errors lke the small seedling birch beside the White Tree of Gondor have been removed.

v1.4 UPDATE: I noticed the enemy stood around and didn't attack sometimes so I changed the invasions so that they are more frequent but smaller. That way they attack with a steady stream of men instead of attacking en masse every once in a while. EDIT: I have just changed all the invasions in v1.4 to The Pig instead of The Wolf as it completely eliminates the problem of the enemy standing around and not attacking.

Synopsis: Gandalf and Pippin have arrived at the great city of Minas Tirith and have been lodging there for several days. The city has been put into the posture of war in preparation of the coming of the armies of Mordor, Southrons from Harad and wild men from the savage lands of the Far East. From the river Anduin sails a great fleet of the Corsairs of Umbar to help in the siege of the city. Consequently little aid has come from the southern fiefs of Lebennin, Dor-en-Ernil and Belfalas due to the coming of the black fleet. For the men of the southern regions of Gondor must defend their own lands. Faramir has returned to the city from his outpost of Henneth Annun in Southern Ithilien. He tells Gandalf of his encounter with Frodo, Sam, Gollum and the ring just two days ago. His decision to let Frodo and Sam go and not return with the ring to Minas Tirith angers his father. It is now early in the morning and Faramir has been summoned by his father Denethor…

Early in the morning the Council had been summoned. There all the Captains of the West judged that because of the threat in the South their force was to weak to make any stroke of war on their own part, unless perchance the Riders of Rohan yet should come. Meanwhile they must man the walls and wait.

‘Yet,’ said Denethor, ’We should not lightly abandon the outer defences, the Rammas (a wall enclosing all of the fields of the Pelennor around the city) made with so great a labour. And the Enemy must pay dearly for the crossing of the River. That he cannot do, in force to assail the City, either north of Cair Andros (a strategically important island on the mighty river Anduin) because of the marshes, or southwards Lebennin because of the breadth of the River, that needs many boats. It is at Osgiliath that he will put his weight, as before when Boromir denied him the passage’

‘That was but a trial, said Faramir. ‘Today we may make the Enemy pay ten times our loss at the passage and yet rue the exchange. For he can afford to lose a host better than we to lose a company. And the retreat of those that we put out far afield will be perilous, if he wins across in force.’

‘And what of Cair Andros?’ said the Prince (Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth, a city by the sea to the south, considered part of Gondor). ‘That, too, must be held, if Osgiliath is defended. Let us not forget the danger on our left. The Rohirrim may come, and they may not. But Faramir has told us of great strength drawing ever to the Black Gate. More than one host may issue from it, and strike for more than one passage.’

‘Much must be risked in war,’ said Denethor. ‘Cair Andros is manned, and no more can be sent so far. But I will not yield the River and the Pelennor unfought – not if there is a captain here who has still the courage to do his lord’s will.’

‘Then all were silent, but at length Faramir said: ‘I do not oppose your will, sire. Since you are robbed of Boromir, I will go and do what I can in his stead – if you command it.’

‘I do so,’ said Denethor.

‘Then farewell?’ said Faramir. ‘But if I should return, think better of me!’

‘That depends on the manner of your return,’ said Denethor.

And so it came that Faramir rode out to the Osgiliath to deny the Enemy the passage across the river. And the hearts of men sank low once more for their beloved lord had departed from the city yet again. By night more ill news came. A host had issued from Minas Morgul and was already drawing nigh to Osgiliath; it had been joined by regiments from the South, Haradrim, cruel and tall and they were led by the Black Captain, the greatest of Sauron’s servants, the Witch King of Angmar.

The next day a great dread was on the city. A messenger came with news that the passage of Anduin was won by the Enemy. Faramir was retreating to the wall of the Pelennor, rallying his men to the Causeway Forts; but he was ten times out-numbered.

‘If he wins back at all across the Pelennor, his enemies will be on his heels, said the messenger. ‘They have paid dear for the crossing, but less dearly than we hoped. The plan has been well laid. It is now seen that in secret they have long been building floats and barges in great numbers in East Osgiliath. They swarmed across like beetles. But it is the Black Captain that defeats us. Few will stand and abide even the rumour of his coming. His own folk quail at him, and they would slay themselves at his bidding.’

‘Then I am needed there more than here,’ said Gandalf, and rode off at once, and the glimmer of him faded soon from sight. Then Pippin was left alone and all that night he stood upon the wall, alone and sleepless, and gazed eastward.

In the early hours of the following day flames began to spring up across in the dim spaces where the walls of the Pelennor stood slowly through the heavy air dull rumbles could be heard. The Enemy was blasting breaches in the Rammas Echor. It was Gandalf that brought the first tidings. With a handful of horsemen he came in the middle morning, riding as escort to a line of wains. They were filled with wounded men, all that could be saved from the wreck of the Causeway Forts. At once he went to Denethor advising him to prepare a sortie of horsemen to hold off the Morgul host while wounded men and troops from the outer defences made their retreat back to the city.

Soon watchers on the walls could see the retreat of the out-companies. Small bands of weary and often wounded men came first with little order; some were running wildly as if pursued. Then a more ordered mass of men came into view, marching not running, still holding together, Faramir and his men. They were being pursued by the enemy, Orcs and wild Southron men with red banners. Overhead fell the winged shadows, the Nazgul stooping to the kill. Then the trumpets were sounded and Denenthor released the sortie of the small cavalry Gondor possessed with the tall and lordly swan-knights of Dol Amroth and their Prince. They broke upon the enemy on either flank. A cheer went up from Faramir’s men and they turned and smote their pursuers. But Denethor did not permit them to go far and trumpet was sounded again. Now the out-companies reformed and steadily they came marching back. They reached the Gate of the City and entered, stepping proudly; and proudly the people of the City looked on them and cried their praise and yet they were troubled in heart. For the companies were grievously reduced. Faramir had lost a third of his men and he himself was gravely wounded.

So now at last the City was besieged, enclosed in a ring of foes. The Rammas was broken, and all the Pelennor abandoned to the Enemy. The last word to come from the outside walls was brought by men flying down the northward road ere the Gate was shut. They were the remnant of the guard that was kept at that point where the way from Anorien and Rohan ran into the townlands.

‘There is no news of the Rohirrim,’ they said. ‘Rohan will not come now. Or if they come, it will not avail us. The new host that we had tidings of has come first, from over the River by the way of Andros, it is said. They are strong battalions of Orcs of the Eye and countless companies of Men of a new sort that we have not met before. Not tall, but broad and grim, bearded like dwarves, wielding great axes. Out of some savage land in the wide East they come, we deem. They hold the northward road; and many have passed into Anorien. The Rohirrim cannot come.’

Playability 5/5 Excellent! To many Minas Tirith maps have you just sitting back and watching. Not this one! Placement of troops is critical to success since many of your crossbowmen aren't on the walls at the start of the map. This gives the player a lot to do.

Balance 4/5 Maybe a tad on the hard side if you don't use the bottleneck trick. Most Minas Tirith maps have only a few swordsmen and pikemen. This one has a lot. To balance this you get a lot of crossbowmen.

Creativity 4/5 While not coommpletely based on the movie or book it still is obviously a Minas Tirith map. The use of pitch in the map is cool.

Map Design 4/5 Very cool, with A LOT of detail and eyecandy. Like you said above you didn't put in all seven levels, but it is still cool. The main reason I didn't give this a five is that there is only a gate to breach the top level on one side, so the attackers only focused on half the city.

Story 4/5 IMO you should put the story in the game briefing and put the notes and hints in a seperate file, but that is just my opinion.

Additional Comments:I just had too play it as the attacker and since its unlocked I did. As it is, its a superior castle design and map. Fun for the whole familia.
