The Renisance Part I- In the Begining
This is the first of many parts to a series i call the renisance. it takes place in a kingdom doomed by its enemies and you are the last chance to save it. In the renisance part I series you battle the rat and snake. have fun and good luck. your input is always welcome as it will help me as i continue the series.
“The Renisance Part I- In the Begining” is a pleasant little map that reminded me of some of the early “campaign” maps that come with Stronghold. The map offers you a fairly flat wooded terrain with a stream flowing through the middle. Nothing fancy about the landscape but it is well rendered with gentle variation in height and good use of rocky ground and plants. Really, a good effort for the designer’s first upload. The game opens with a keep and granary already in place. Some food production and wood cutters are also prepositioned. A few weapons are provided and await the construction of the armory and barracks. Attacks come at regular intervals but really only the first one was of much challenge as the enemy troops outnumbered the defenders at that point. Afterwards, I was able to steadily recruit more archers until, at the end of the game, I had 64 archers defending a walled-in keep and a forward defensive point protecting the outbuildings.
The size of the invasions did increase each time but not nearly in proportion to my own defensive development. The game was perfectly playable but quite easy to beat on NORMAL. There were no negative events (e.g. fires or plague) scripted in. Playability – 4, Balance – 2
Nice imaginative story, not too long. It would be good to apply a spell checker to the text before posting! Story – 3
This map could be improved by increasing the sizes of the invasions that follow the first one. The final invasion could probably be 3 or 4 times larger than it is currently. You may also want to script in a fire or two or have a drought triggered by a certain quantity of wood in the stockpile.
But I did enjoy playing this map from WarLord Cuileann. Experienced players will want to try this on Hard or Very Hard though beginners may be confortable with Normal.
I am looking forward to seeing more maps from this new designer.
Update: I went back and played this map on VERY HARD. The first invasion was really close and I needed a couple re-starts, but after that I pushed the manufacture of bows and, by the end of the game, I had 84 archers. In the final attack none of the enemy even survived the river crossing. Fun to play though!
