Having won a smashing victory over the forces of Baron Von Schrapp at the Monastary at Lane, you leave the monastary in the defense of the monks and charge southward. Your hope is to catch the "Mad Wolf" unaware at the town of Astbury before survivors of the seige can regroup forces with thier commander. But as your forces march from the monastary, scouts bring you bad news. Essex, the castle of your uncle, the Lord Winston Hale, has fallen to the Baron's chief lieutenant. This is a dual blow to you and the King, as Lord Winston was a valiant noble, and his castle at Essex protected a vast pitch depository crucial to the war effort.

Word arrives from king James ordering that you must retake Essex quickly, and that he has drawn together an army of the local militiamen to relieve you once the castle is under your control. Angered at the death of Lord Winston, you prepare to charge from Lane and dash to Essex to avenge your fallen uncle.

A dispatch from the monks arrive with an advantagous offer; the monks have a riverboat they are willing to loan you, which will take you down the river Essex, allowing you to reach the castle a full day quicker than an overland march would allow.Realizing the element of suprise could be the difference in the battle, you gather as many men as the craft will allow and prepare to set sail.

As you board the riverboat, you learn from your spies that the Baron has learned of your intentions to retake Essex. He has sent rienforcements to the castle. You smile as you realize the Baron's men will be of no help to his lieutenant with your surprise river voyage. On the other hand, you will be forced to defend the castle against an all out siege until the King's forces arrive. To add to your troubles, the King has requested a bounty of pitch from you, as well.
