Beaumaris, the final link in the chain of King Edward I's ring of Welsh castles, was long planned to be the seat of English power in Wales, but only begun in 1295 after Madog's uprising in 1293.
It promised to be the ultimate in the concentric castle design, the pinnacle of Master James of St. George's career. With an 18ft moat, followed by 16 towers and 2 gates on the outer ward, and the six largest towers ever to be built in inner ward, it would have been an impressive sight indeed. It even had a tidal dock for sea-borne resupply, something still visible if you visit today.
Unfortunately for castle fans, it was never completed as Scotland diverted the King's attention in 1298. This scenario envisages "What if?" it had been completed and Madog suddenly rose again to attack a skeleton garrison... for anything more than a skeleton garrison would be indefeatable in such an awesome castle.

Apologies to historical fanatics:
This map diverges from the actual plans in the following, to enhance playability:
1)Many towers are square, rather than round. This in Stronghold terms represent the smaller towers/lower heights that Master James planned for the outer ward.
2)The inner bailey is actually raised (not that you can see) in the game, but not in real life. This makes the inner wall taller than the outer wall, again to represent the height advantage of the inner ward.
3)The gatehouses are not as complex as planned, or as another scenario has. This is for playability sake.
4)The keep (an obsolete concept by the time of the concentric castle) is best represented by the South gatehouse. I have been forced to locate it close to, but cannot connect it to the gatehouse, again for playabilty sake.

This Castle is worth downloading and sieging, but could use some tweaking.

PLAYABILITY: Note up front that Victory Conditions for the Attacker are not "Kill the Lord". The sole victory requirement to "Eliminate all enemy units" may well affect how you approach the siege. (NOTE: The preceding comment is not factored into the score whatsoever - just wanted to point it out to people used to having an objective of killing the Lord.) The Castle falls to standard siege techniques. It requires a slow attack if you are trying to keep troop losses down, but little imagination is needed to win.

BALANCE: Well under 40% losses to kill off the entire garrison. Since the Castle is a reproduction of an actual real life structure, the only way to improve it's defensive capability would be to increase the strength of the garrison and/or add more pitch or killing pits.

CREATIVITY: Well presented, but limited in creativity somewhat by the fact it is a historical reproduction.

MAP DESIGN: Again, detail was above average and the Castle itself was well presented. With so much flat land, though, there was litle room for creative license to raise this to a "5".

STORYLINE/INSTRUCTIONS: The historical information was much appreciated and resulted in an above average score here, but the reference to garrison strength was off base.

Beaumaris Castle is portrayed well in this scenario, but needs a stronger defense in order to move up the rating ladder. As it stands now, the map leaves you wishing for a stronger challenge.
