You have been asked by your master to establish a colony on the east coast of England near Scarborough. You find a likely spot for your keep on a piece of high land with panoramic views of the beautiful sea, easily defendable against enemy attacks. The area is teeming with natural resources: wood, stone, pitch and iron. The woodlands are bursting with wild deer, common in this part of the country. All is not cosy however, the woods also contain bear and wolves and must be treated with caution.

The aim of this mission is to establish your colony and achieve certain tasks such as making a store of weapons and having your people blessed by Freya the goddess of love. A group of archers and spearmen start the mission with you, ready to defend your people against attacking bear and wolves.Should any of your brave warriors fall while in combat with wild animals, there is a small supply of spare bows and spears in your armoury.

There will be no need to amass a great army, a handful of spearmen and archers should be enough to persuade a bear who is foolish enough to put his nose in your honeypot, that he is not welcome there! Establish your colony, complete your tasks and turn your settlement into: Scarbay, the settlement of choice...

Scarbay was an enjoyable economic mission which required a number of goals to be met to achieve victory. Overall gameplay was relaxed. However, though there were many negative events and wild animals to deal with early on, the game does not appear to have any “Lose” conditions and you are given unlimited time to achieve victory.

Balance: 3
There seemed to be no way to lose except for just giving up. So this is more like a FreeBuild map than an economic one. For me, the hardest goals to achieve were the combination of 70% blessed and 95% drinking ale. It seems that alcohol consumption leads to a decline in church attendance. I’ll avoid further social commentary and give the rest of my scores.


Creativity: 3
Good overall Economic map. I did not notice anything really new or different here but this is a great start for a new designer. Hope to see many more maps from tmjrawlinson.

Map Design: 3
Nice map with a good layout but could have used more detail, variation of terrain, plants, etc. to make it more realistic. The stream was created very simply with “river” painted on green low land.

Story/Instructions: 4
Good story, well written. Contains just a few suggestions for play to get you started.

Additional Comments:

I played on normal and found I had to fill up most of he usable map space with agriculture and industry to complete the goals. Just a bit sad to start with a pleasant natural setting and fill it with industry. (If you’ve read "The Return of the King" - it ended up looking like the Shire after Saroman got his hands on it.)
