The Well Spoken Baron

By lucky chance the King’s messengers advance through the ‘Valley of No Hope’ with minimal casualties to finally join up with the Baron. Bruised and battered they pass over a vital message that accompanied them on their long journey, it simply read ‘BETRAYED – More will follow – Use the treasury and carry out initial plan’. King George.
It was no secret to the people that their favourite Baron had a minor stutter, a very articulate man nevertheless
“One must always find the right words to say” He’d often muse.
However, with the message in hand the stuttering, distressed Baron struggles to cope, and begins to finger the raised lettering of the note.
Forced to dismiss the extra pressure placed on his fragile lingual skills he disappears into silent thought to ponder his next tactical move. A quick wipe of his sweaty brow later he turns to his waiting audience.
“My good people, I have wri-written confirmation of be-betrayal…..WHAT! Speak up Spearmen! You speak of Black Arrows!?!.....

The Well Spoken Baron FAQ

‘The Well Spoken Baron’ Is the result of a 2-3 months worth of Stronghold play – and as always I’m delighted to have created something that might offer a few hours of joy to those who are fond as I am of the original Stronghold. After many tweaks, modifications and play tests I’m pleased to say that ‘The Well Spoken Baron’ is ready and waiting for ‘hopefully’ a lasting Stronghold experience – I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

So what’s the map all about?
The premise of ‘The Well Spoken Baron’ is quite straight forward. You play the King’s friend, a stuttering Baron, whom has obeyed orders and is dispatched to rid the evil that has settled in a nearby county. With no real protection needed the Baron is asked to build up an army and exterminate the idle Wolf. All seemed fine for the Baron until one of the Kings messengers pass on a note confirming betrayal within the ranks. From this point on, a combination of the Wolf’s and the Pig’s men descend on your settlement to rid the world of you. You are ill prepared and lack an army but more disturbing than that is the fact there is no GATE for protection. A Spearmen rushes to confirm the news of enemy arrows approaching….its bad news! The attacks have started.

What’s required of the player?
‘The Well Spoken Baron’ can be quite frantic at times but will keep you totally engaged throughout playing. I recommend though it should be played on a low speed as there is so much you need to do during the battles, and as the battles are so frequent it’s best to fully understand how your campaign is going. You will be readily attacked, until it’s time to fulfill your duties to the King so during this time you must build up the most powerful army you can manage. You have control over the treasury so money isn’t a problem – but there will be many other problems on your journey.
The map itself is quite hard and because of the nature of the invasions it will require the player to probably play a few times just to get to grips with what’s going on. Your tactics mean everything and whatever you plan will eventually decide the outcome, there are however limited engineers and pitch so use them wisely

There’s no gate?
A key feature for the player is the gate. To be exact ‘no gate’ a large construction that offers no protection but serves as some ideal platforms for your arrows. From a map making angle the ‘no gate’ is great because the enemy will flow straight into he settlement without any dodgy AI shenanigans that sometimes happens when creating invasion maps.
Wave after wave of attack will require you to use good tactics and excellent planning, but rest assured there’s enough room for a cohesive economy. Something you the player will have to heavily rely on for any success.

How big are the invasions?
Fear not as the invasions won’t task your computer too much, I use a crappy comp and this map runs very smoothly indeed. The invasions as you might expect will be progressive and naturally will culminate in a large battle, but because the map is only 200x200 it won’t demand too much work from your computer.

Is it fun?
I’ve played this map countless times on normal and it’s a challenge and half; that said it holds out to be great fun and will leave you feeling accomplished and satisfied afterwards. But I will say that won’t I? :O)

Good luck, Andy.
