Shadowlands
Storyline –
The village of Hajib has been firmly inside the crusader states since the northern conquest. However a messenger has brought news that Arab troops have poured southwards, through the mountain passes and into the crusader states. In retaliation the Marshal at Tyre sends you with a group of his best knights to take back the village from the infidel invaders. After capturing the village your task is to build it up into a castle that will be able to withstand future rebel incursions. Historically the village has been surrounded with rich grasslands but alas, but for the last three years a terrible drought has gripped the land. The great oasis next to the village has shrunk to one tenth of its original size and now is just a mud filled marsh. The rich grassland has vanished leaving meagre strips around the last few water sources. This lack of appropriate farmland will hinder your development but make the most of all the resources available. Stone, iron and even pitch can be found and used to aid your defence against the infidels. The marketplace can be used but not all goods can be traded, the village is remote and the supplies are sparse of most materials. Good luck, you must not let the infidels take a hold in this land again, here you must make a stand!
Notes –
•This map is a Cede map, where you attack and defend a castle. In this Cede you do not have to kill all the enemy soldiers, just kill the Lord and the remaining Arab troops will become yours. They will be very useful.
•The attacking part of the map is not supposed to be very difficult, just remember to cut a direct path to the lord, ignore the other Arab troops.
•There is room for only two stone quarries on the map, build them as soon as possible. You will need as much stone as you can get as trading it is disabled. Pitch is something that can be very useful in defence as well, although use wisely as there is limited supplies.
•Farming is restricted but you can still have ale coverage, this is very important for popularity as you can have high taxes.
•There are two separate attacks of Arab rebels, one soon after taking control of the village and a much larger attack once you have had time to build up a big castle, with plenty of defenders.
I hope you enjoy this scenario; I have tested it on Normal but all other difficulties should work fine, experienced players may want to play on Hard, or even V Hard.
Enjoy!

Playability: 4
Preparing for the attacks kept you busy in this map, whether you were collecting resources for workshops or saving a few cold coins for hiring mercenaries to stop the enemy this game kept a fast pace as you prepared for the attacks.
Balance: 4
Balance was good though the use of moat did prevent much of the enemy attacks, in particular the assasins. The majority of my men were killed and i had about 25 archers left so I give a 4, waiting for the assasins at the end took a while as they had no target except the tower outsude my main wall, I think some siege equipment would have been good.
Creativity: 5
As always creativity is a 5, the ruiend castle the designed atacking points to keep you guessing are all wonderful, good job!
Map Design: 5
Do i have to type anything, you probably get tired of hearing the same thing over and again, nah compliments are always welcome and you can never have to many. :) Great looking map, the terrain looks great the cliff and the receeding oasis all fit in well with the map and storylinge, great work.
Story/Instructions: 5
Simple is often the best, short sweet, detailed and and explaining the map, it sets us up nicely for the game ahead. The notes are helpful and that is a 5 from me.
Additional Comments:
Another good map, this is your first crusader map isn't it, I hope wont be your last, great jog. Looking for some fun, will you prepare fast enough before the enemies arrival? Find out. Download this map Now!
Looking forward to future maps,
Best wishes,

Shadowlands
Wow, let’s celebrate premiere at Heavengames! NAT has created his first Crusader map, and without any doubt, it’s a great one!
Attracted by the very promising minimap and the storyline I didn’t hesitate to download and play this exceptional cede-map. The concept represents a simple idea: Prepare yourself for the final large attack, but you can only anticipate roughly of which dimension this second invasion would be.
Playability:
I love such kind of maps very much, where the player is absolutely free to find his own path for victory while running into obstacles throughout the entire game. The author offers us a well-balanced variety of natural conditions to develop economically and on the military side. Therefore, it’s always up to you, whether all your preparations for defense will pay in the end.
Balance:
At the beginning, I found out that it would be better to attack the enemy Lord indirectly by making a detour with your mounted knights in safe distance. Don’t take the direct way straight on, you might lose too many men, and you’ll need them later…! So I started a very successful surprise attack from northeast.
Digging moats will help a lot to be prepared for the final large invasion coming from all directions. When the invaders succeeded in conquering one of my gates and entering the small castle, I set my settlement on fire; most of the infidels died in flames on their way forward to the keep. Finally, a special commando unit of six archers eliminated those remaining assassins holding out at the signposts.
Creativity:
The concept is perfect, i.e. make the best of the present natural resources and try to protect your weak colony against an incalculable opponent in the midst of a rough and unknown desert.
Map Design:
I apologize if I seem to be a little bit fussy, but I suggest adding more small green and sandy (mixed up) soil elements around the village that would indicate the former larger fertile arable land before the disastrous drought occurred. I’m enthusiastic about the craggy and rocky elevations littered with many countless stones…simply great! You feel the seclusion and loneliness of a cruel desert being merciless!
Story:
What can I say? Read it and play!
Again, an excellent and exemplary job by NAT!

Map plays fine and doesnt have any issues with actual game mechanics. The final battle is tough and will kill ya quick. I spent alot of time on iron and stone prospecting. I took off here because there is a barrage of attack announcments before the final battle. So many that it jams up the final reinforcements on your defense with all the arab and crusader cut ins.
Balance: 4
A little light on hard to find resources. The slaves dont light up your buildings as much as I thought they would, which is good. They go after your king. I probably killed 100 slaves with my king, before I died in the last wave in the last battle. Id say about 400 slaves at the end.
Creativity: 5
Giving it a 5 because of the hard work and planning it took to make this fine map.
Map Design: 4.5
Watch out for lion attack. Lions seem to be wandering in all the time throughout the game 'en masse'. Use a good group of archers to kill them. Realistic looking land with mountain areas filled with little bits of iron or stone. Good!
Story/Instructions: 4.5
I read the text.doc file in the zip. Well written hints and background. Keep it going, man!
Additional Comments:
I'm going now to play this map again. Nice job on your 'first' map submission. If all my first maps were this quality I would be famously rich by now!

An enjoyable game, perhaps between 'normal' & 'hard'. An large encircling moat is essential, with a single winding entrance covered by towers. |
