File Details
Map Size: 400x400 (Large)
Difficulty: Hard
Minimap:
"Sir, the last wave of the enemy have just retreated! but i don't think they have given up yet, so we must be prepared!"
"We must build our defences and repair the walls that are destroyed!"
"eh..sir, we dont have enough time to repair the wall, because the next wave of the enemy are coming!"
"also, we dont have enough iron to build our oil pot, we must get those resources before the next wave of the enemy!"
"well, is there any traders near by?"
"hmm... yes, sir! we do have some traders near by, but they only have stones, crossbows, beer, wood plank to trade with us. we still don't have leather armours to build crossbowmen, we must build diaryfarms outside of the castle in the oasis."
"wait, look! some reinforcements have arrived!"

(those are the stuff i made up, even the enemies' attack in the game are made up. exept the castle)

now this is the informations about the castle:

Stretching over a thirty-acre site in the centre of Caerphilly, this imposing Castle is a striking testament to the turbulent times of medieval Wales. Located close to the site of a former Roman fort, the building of Wales' largest castle began in 1268, under orders from the Anglo-Norman Lord Gilbert de Clare. Its construction acted as powerful symbol of Anglo-Norman rule and reinforced de Clare's control over the conquered lands of the Marchia Wallia. Its magnificence no doubt struck fear into the hearts of the local people. Its formidable stone and water 'concentric' defences provided protection from the Welsh and in particular against the threat of Gruffydd ap Llywelyn - the Prince of Wales. Llywelyn launched his first attack against the Castle even before its defences were complete. The fortress also played an administrative role, replacing the local court of the commote as the centre of administration and revenue collection.

Throughout the late thirteenth and early fourteenth century, the Castle continued to be the focus of Welsh attacks. In 1316 Llywelyn Bren a noble of Senghenydd, raised an army of ten thousand men and attacked the Castle. The attackers failed to breach its defences, although much of the town of Caerphilly was destroyed. By the mid-fourteenth century relative calm had fallen upon Caerphilly and parts of the Castle were probably abandoned. However, its upkeep continued throughout the fifteenth century, when the Beauchamp family spent a considerable sum of money improving its domestic accommodation. At the end of the century the Castle was leased to the Lewis family. They 'robbed' its stone to improve their own home at Van Mansion.

The Castle's role in the Civil War is far from clear. Reputedly, its massive medieval defences were damaged by gunpowder, but there is no evidence to support this. Beyond these defences an earthen redoubt was built. Whether the Royalists or Parliamentarians raised this gun platform is again unclear, as is the nature of any battle that ensued.

In the late eighteenth century the Marquees of Bute acquired Caerphilly Castle, His descendants would oversee its 'great rebuilding'. Restoration of the Castle began in the late nineteenth century, under the direction of the immensely wealthy third Marquees of Bute. This work continued throughout the last century under the fourth Marquees and later the State. The result of this extensive and painstaking work is the Castle you see today.

Map starts off good, with plenty of time to position your troops in the castle. This also allows you to get a oil smelter going and get the engineers ready before the siege. You have quite a few archers, knights, and pikemen. Use them effectively inside. I took off because a few of the crossbowmen seem stuck on the walls (maybe being stranded on the outer wall was the effect the author wanted)? I like to be able to move troops around. Also the pitch pits are not placed very strategically, leaving big gaps around vulnerable places like the moat and gatehouses. But these are small potatoes, and well done on Playability.

Balance: 3.5
This map is tough, I didnt beat it. I made it to the end of the second wave and then died after a inner wall breech. I only played it once, and I will play it again soon. I took off because of the difficulty. I was going to just let the castle run on aggressive to see what would happen (without moving troops around). If someone does that, tell me what happens on here.

The map is a basic defend/siege map, but has alot more to offer than just waves and waves of unending, repeating invaders. It has some events and natural looking topographical features (like hills). The iron mine area looks like it was added on at the end of the map making process. You could add a little detail to make this map a real gem.

Map Design: 5
After thinking about it, this map is accurate and really depicts the way they designed the castles in Wales. Nice Job! Two walls were used in defense, with gateshouses that lined up (this made storming the keep easier). In later castle design they used gates that werent lined up. Important towns used castles that had confusing multi-gated rising structures (like the 7 gates at present Edinburgh Castle).

Story/Instructions: 5
You worked hard on the story and background, and deserve a 5.
