Risen probably on a preexisting etruscan installation, in 1174 it was taking in possession for account of Federico Barbarossa. From that period it was prey of the guelfe and ghibelline factions that was alternated in the dominion of the Comune of Assisi, suffering more times lootings and devastations.
In 1362, in sight of the definitive return of the Pope from Avignone, the cardinal Egidio Albornoz let begin the jobs of restructuring, that brought in prominence of it strategic importance on the territory.
But having never finished the struggle between the city factions, the Rocca Maggiore continued to pass of hand between the allied powerful persons of the families of time in time victorious in the dispute of power, from the Visconti to Biordo Michelotti, from the Sforza
to the Fortebraccio, to stay to the Church subsequently up to the transfer of property to the Italian State, in 1877.
The map devoted to the Rocca Maggiore in Assisi is a passage for me very meaningful, because Assisi is the city where I have born and where I live firmly from almost 39 years!
The Rocca Maggiore - or Rocca, simply, for us "assisani" - has been for much of my time a space of games and walk (at times also "romantic"): also for this, won't be easy to conquer it!
To end, a small suggestion: on the opposite angle to the poster from which the army comes, the panorama reveals a Cathedral... This is the Basilica of St. Francis, as it is enjoyed really from the hill of the Rocca.
Good fun! |

Playability: This map is very, very hard and to date I have yet to win. In fact, it is virtually unbeatable. I have tried countless times with different troop combinations, methods of attack and switched from mass siege to tactical picking away, all to no avail. This has kept me interested for a while now, but I have to give up. It needs to be challenging yet winnable, but it isn't either, sorry.
Balance: As with above, you are literally going into hell trying to conquer this. The castle itself can defend with much fewer troops. There are far too many archers to effectively compete against, and don't even try to throw everything at the only gateway into the castle, as the almighty pitch ditch will make short work of your progress. Far too many ballista for my liking, rendering my trebuchets ineffective for the short time they were in range of the castle and standing. Not very enjoyable. The castle defends itself as a defender playing on very hard. I didn't have to press a thing.
Creativity: Looks fine, as do all of the castles designed by this author. Again, a real castle reconstructed in detail.
Map Design: Not bad, the castle is well made with no obvious flaws, the landscape is a little bare and uninteresting but shows some use of the terrain tools.
Story/Instructions: As with other maps by this author, you have a notepad write up as well as screen shots and photos. Neatly done, but could have achieved a better mark if the notes included in the zip were in English.
Overall, another potentially great siege, let down by it's sheer impossibility, even at easy level. However, if anyone else has played this map successfully, or if the author wants to pass on tips, I will quite happily replay and review it again. Maybe my tactics are at fault! |
