With the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Temple in 70AD, the Kingdom of Judah came to an end. A small group of Zealots fled to the fortress of Masada to continue the rebellion. The Romans sent the 10th legion to crush the last vestiges of rebellion. There were less than 1,000 defenders at Masada. The 19th legion was about 10,000 legionaires and around 5,000 auxillaries. Masada itself was a fortified mountain that was easily defended. The Romans established eight base camps surrounding the stronghold. It took almost two years and the building of a ramp from the valley floor to the top of the mountain. When the Romans entered the fortress they were met with the sight dead bodies, all had committed sucide. For the sake playability I had to put in grass as there is no way I know in skirmish mode to stockpile supplies. The grass is all next to the Mesa as I felt that any residual moisture would be at the base of the mountain. If you choose seven of the better AI's it is all but impossible to win, however, here is nothing to keep you from playing with 3 to 4 opponents. Enjoy Von Kamstra |

Nice to see this. I have been to Masada and the ruins of the fortress there. Part of the Roman ramp they built to storm the fortress is still there. Truly an awesome idea for a map. Cant wait to play and rate. I have a version of this, but it was one of my first maps and it looks horrible. This looks good!

I played this map against 4 computer opponents: Saladin, Wazir, Caliph, and Sultan. I set up the game on crusader level (many troops, little gold) with everyone starting with 2000 gold. At first I thought the map might lag with 4 comp opps. Sometimes anything over 3 causes some lag, especially online in multiplayer. But this map didnt lag. Wazir was easy to stop with a ballista ranging and killing all that came out to work the fields from his corner postion. A couple of catpults did the rest of the work to put Wazir on defensive. Saladin was a harder nut to crack, but I used some sneaky archers and shields to indirect fire his castle, and slowly wore him down to only a defensive. Caliph's castle took alot of work to beat back to defensive, its those tall towers that work together in his defense. Sultan was eliminated early, 40 assassins took him out in a daring sneak attack that I ran perfectly. Then using a team of spearmen (cheap), armored knights, shields, and catapults with cows - I worked my way around and took out all of them. I did take alot of damage from enemy mangonels in some spots, and enemy fire ballista could fire up on the farmland, causing fires up top. I used several waterpots to cover the entire plateau so I wouldnt have to come back later and fight a fire.
Balance: 5
The balance is perfect with four enemy. I questioned the amount of starting wall, but then found out that you get shot up ALOT. So 5 balance.

I toured Israel in the early 90s. The West Bank is now a very dangerous place. When I was there I was tear-gassed, searched at gunpoint countless times, was left out in the middle of a desert by an arab taxicab driver when I wouldnt pay him triple, and rode in a city bus with the windows shattered from thrown rocks. On the beach at the dead sea just down from masada, some girls (everyone is required to do millitary service in Israel) were sitting on the beach with their M-16s. I talked to one, who approached me saying, "You look like a picture." This map brought back some of those old memories so well done on creativity.

Would have been great to see the dead sea represented on the map. Also the main entrance to masada is on the end. There were gates in other locations, but the winding path that led up to the gates was on the north end and had a smaller plateau there. The Romans that attacked it couldnt make it up this winding path without getting shot up by the defenders. So they built the ramp up the west side.
Story/Instructions: 4
Good work researching the time period and getting the details down. Nice work all around on this map, from an area that I have been to.
Additional Comments:
Thumbs Way up on this less than accurate, but still very well done map.

Thanks for the review Lollard. I really enjoyed hearing about your experiences in the region. Babes with machine guns,I am not sure if this is an erotic fantasy or nightmare for me. I would encourage you to complete your map of Masada and use your experiences to make it more realistic. Put in the Dead Sea and get the path right, I never found information telling me where it was located. Maybe call it The Siege of Masada.

I looked at the old masada map I made over a year ago. Its so basic and out of balance, that I would have to restart the whole project. I will definately do that when I get some time, but right now its just not possible. Sometimes I write in when people make maps of the middle east and mention small flaws. Your multiplayer map here is worth the 4.4 and should be downloaded by all. I hope to see more of your work.
