CityScape I- Sim

Author File Description
File Details
Map Size: 300x300 (Medium)
"The city of Simdomburgh is a hustle-and-bustle place, where activity abounds within the city walls and also in the supporting farm village to the northeast. Set in a land of rolling hills, Simdomburgh is one of the most innovative engineering projects in the world. The city features two levels, the second level in several rings all accessed through the main keep. The main gate, mostly placed for aesthetic reasons, is harolded as the most imaginative entrance to any city. Also, the viaduct to its neighboring city, Simdomopolis, celebrates the most recent technological innovations. The genius of the designers is surely unsurpassed, and will remain that way for a long time. Enjoy the metropolis and surrounding area of Simdomburgh."
- Simdomburgh Travel Brocheure

I created the most modern-looking metropolis I could think of, and I came up with this. This is pure eyecandy, so eat it up. Thank you.

There are interesting elements, and its a busy little hive, but nothing really ground-breaking here. Lots of Towers. Personally, I'd advise you knock down about half the towers and come up with interesting bits of business to connect your various industries. The use of steps here and there on the walls is an interesting look. I understand the towers are meant to represent skyscrapers in a modern landscape, but I think you could do something more original and striking by sculpting structures out of stone walls and differing land heights. Just using towers is pretty limiting and its virtually impossible to make a bunch of towers side-by-side look interesting or unique.

Map Design: 3
The landscape is very low on detail and outside of a single, straighforward waterfall (I assume is squared off and unnatural looking because this is the man-made aquaduct?) which also has very little detail. I'm giving it a 3.0 but that is slightly generous if you compare this map, in which design and detail is all there is because of no gameplay, to many very detailed and imaginative maps submitted here. Idea: if this is a modern city, how about some freeways, railways etc. by using low walls or whatever?

Story/Instructions: 3
They are pretty standard, but I don't completely understand them. How is the gate "the most imaginative entrance to any city"? I like the tower within a tower trick, but other than that there isn't much there. If the hyperbole about "most technologically advanced" etc. is meant to be ironic, ok, but really I don't see the map as living up to its description.

Additional Comments:

With a Freebuild, you really need to show you've spent a lot of time on conceptualizing and executing neat ideas that are interesting and innovative. I'm sorry, but I don't see _any_ here. Otherwise, why make a Freebuild? It can't be played, so it needs to be very interesting to look at, or else conducive to being transformed into a decent Invasion or Siege. I'm sorry, I can't come up with a more positive review.

I find if you sit on a map for a few days or weeks and revisit it, you can often look with a fresh eye and add details and ideas. Look through the structures, ruins, plants etc. and see if there's anything that inspires you. Someone once said "a painting is never completed, its only abandoned". Its the same way with a map. You can keep adding and revising and improving a map indefinitely. You can over-do it of course, but this map is probably many hours from that level.

It has potential, but needs some work.
