Poenari Stronghold
---Vlad the Impaler's Stronghold---
Poienari Stronghold, the only mountain stronghold of Wallachia,27 km away from Curtea de Arges, located in Arges District of today's Romania. Situated at 860 meters from sea level,is the oldest and only stronghold in Romanian's Carpathian Mountians. It is a steep climb up 1,500 steps.
It is said, in chronicles, that was build in XV th century, but the archaeology discoverys show that the stronghold is from 13th century. The fotress was build in two phases. In the first phase of construction was build the solid square tower (7m L,6m W),made from crude stone (the tower wall is 2 m thick). This kind of military construction is distinguished to the east-european feudal fortresses from first half of 13rd centuy. The rest of construction ,were the stone keep is located, was fortified with a tree trunks palisade
In the second phase of construction, the stronghold was equiped with a stone wall and three round towers. The old square tower remain but was not conected with the new walls. The walls are 1.5 m thick, and 140m long. The inner yard is 50m long and 6-10m wide
Round towers are a architectural rarity fot that tine in North of Danube,
for example in all Transilvania and Wallachia, this kind of military construction, is fund in just two examples, one in Breaza (Prahova District) and the other in Turda (Cluj District), but all the bizantin fortresses from all Balcan Peninsula
were build with round towers.
Poenari Stronghold is considerated as an important military site, characteristic in period when the Wallachia begun to organize itself as an feudal state . She was used until second half of XVI-th century .
The construction, perfectly adapted to the terrain couldn’t host a garrison larger than 30-40 men but enough to defend the position.
The castle was devastated many times during the turks sieges, but when The Impaler started his kingship he rebuild it using enthralled boyars.
In 1457, sustained by a faithful army, the prince began a campaign for liberation, destroying his enemies. During the Easter, he arrested a big number of boyars with their wives and their children, many of them being immediately impaled. Others were chained and dragged to Poienari, forced to rebuild the castle in ruins.
Once it was finished, the fortress seemed unbreakable; from its towers, the soldiers could catch the enemies in a crossfire. The walls of stone could resist to cannon salvos extremely easy. The legend tells us, that for his last precaution, the Impaler made a secret passage from the fountain of the castle, through the mountain, towards a cave nearby the river.
But against all odds, he was defeated by turks, that sieged the Poienari, in 1462. Desperate, his wife committed suicide, drowning in the river, falling down from one tower. The Impaler, it said, ranaway using the secret passage. Later, he regain the throne, but is killed in 1476.
Today, abandoned and full of herbs, the fortress "lays in front of siege armies" of rains and tourists who vizit it . |

Playability: 3
The map was a little fun to play, but it was too easy.
Balance: 2
There really wasn't much balance, when defending, all you had to do was sit back and watch. When attacking, you only had to make two trebuchets, destroy the perimeter turret, and voila! You could just walk in and kill the lord.
Creativity: 3
The castle and the map wasn't extremely creative, the castle was just a box except from the stairs, they were not too bad.
Map Design: 3
The hills looks very square and clumsy, but it is concealed by trees etc., so it doesn't look that bad.
Story/Instructions: 4
The story was good, not too long, not too short, a little more required for a 5, though.
Additional Comments:
I hate to post negative reviews, but I'm afraid I have to be honest.

Isn't reviews like Demonta's a violation against the rules? If you think that the map suck so bad, you should at least have some arguments. And if it is THAT bad, you could help the designer by not reviewing it at all, just posting a comment on what could be improved. Straightthrough 1-reviews without any feedback at all (and even no suggestions on what could be improved) is very rude and unfair. |
