Greetings Lords and Ladies,

It has been some time since I last created a crusader map, and this one has taken quite some time to prepare, from its humble origin as an incomplete entry for the historical design competition it laid dormant for some time.
However I am extremely pleased to have finally finished the map and even more pleased that it is here for you all to enjoy.

Here's some of the History, the full historical document can be viewed in the zip file.

Krak Des Chevaliers, also known as Crac des Chevaliers which mean Fortress of the Knights in a mixture of Arabic and French acted as the headquarters of the Knights Hospitaller, a monastic order which was first founded after the pope Gregory the Great commissioned the building of a hospital in Jerusalem. The monastic hospitaller order was founded following the First Crusade by the Blessed Gerard, whose role as founder was confirmed by a Papal bull of Pope Paschal II in 1113. Gerard acquired territory and revenues for his order throughout the Kingdom of Jerusalem and beyond. His successor, Raymond du Puy de Provence, established the first significant Hospitaller infirmary near to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Initially the group just cared for those pilgrims who made it to Jerusalem but the order soon extended into providing an armed escort to pilgrims. The escort soon grew into a substantial force.

Have fun and good luck,

artofmath Playability: 3.5
It was quite challenging at first, but also satisfying. I tried many strategies, the final bieng the most obvious. Since there are no ballistas in the castle, I wiped out all the archers and xbows with just the 2 fire ballistas. A tough castle!

Balance: 3.5
For me, it wasn't perfectly balanced. The addition of the 2 fire ballistas without enemy tower ballistae clearly for me made the map not very well balanced. It was easy, not to mention tedious work to clear all the walls. The fire ballistas were almost dead after. Then, a chargeof the swordsmen and battering rams made short work of everything. However, it took about 20 years.

Creativity: 3.5
Especially in historical castles, I (ME) don;t see too much creativity. If I were to put up a higher rating for creativity, there should be an added extra twist to the storyline. Nothing special here except a good depiction of Krak des Chevaliers. For me, just that won't do too well. Even if Saladin is attacking the castle here instead of leaving it alone, well....

Map Design: 4
The general landscape was nothing special. However, the custom farms were quite an eye-candy. I liked the more accurate depiction of the castle. However, for it to be more siegeable, destroyed walls should not leave impassable terrain.

Story/Instructions: 4
This was intended to be a historically accurate siege, quite a bit of background history was given. Quite a history lesson! Not that it was boring, but it was enough to paint the scenario and life of this mighty fortress.

Additional Comments:
Quite a refreshing map for me. It was all "down to basics" siege. It was really a relief to see the victory screen here.

the big T I think its cool how you got rid of the farmhouses somehow and made 1 giant field of wheat. It must have taken you guys days to do this!

Very beautyful flow! Knights attack (allthough futile -grin-), bowman keep there watch and the invaders come in waves ...
In other words: Everything is neatly in place and starts rolling as if it was meant to be ever since.

Balance: 3.5
With the tactics I used (utilizing the advantage of fire balistae having a longer range then any of the defenders) the crusaders (AKA defenders) never stood a chance since no "real" towers existed with no balista. Thus I had to down this a bit. NEVERTHELESS THIS IS THE BEST MAP I HAVE SEEN SO FAR!

Creativity: 5
I could go on for ages on this point but sometimes less is more. Download it and be in silent awe.

Must have taken ages... Why is there no "6" in the menu?

Story/Instructions: 5
Beautyful story, great idea.

Additional Comments:
This is the first review I post. The reason? This map is worth it! Period.
Download and enjoy or die unhappy. Your choice!

peter2008 Thanks for this map, at first.
There's one tactics, turning the fight into something like a snake surrounding its bag. The attacker is given enough gold to construct shields - and reconstruct new ones before losing the engineers manning the ones getting damaged. The AI defender has no means to deal with this step by step progress. Pitty for him.
This way I lost only about 30 men.
Lord Faramir II I love Krak Des Chevaliers! This is one of my favorite castles in the Crusades. You did a real good job re-creating it WL_D!
svenjo maybe you should update it and set up a time limit so that those guys who only use the ballistas will lose :P

The gameplay is very entertaining and fun, it is always a pleasure to re-play this map, I know it for a long time and it's one of my favorite historical maps.

Balance: 3
The shields, fire ballistas and the player's height advantage is just too much for the enemy. Of course the strategy takes time, but it assures a crushing victory over Krak's king.

Creativity: 5
The map is highly creative, the author has shown an amazingly vast imagination on a historical castle recreation. Everything fits with... everything, lol. As I mentioned in the map design, the castle reconstruction is really formidable and unique, as it is most of the map's aspects. Even the troops are carefully set on a great battle posture.

From a corner to the other, from the castle to the custom farms and desert, everything is purely breathtaking. It doesn't matter if you played 99% of all maps in the world, this is like no other. Just the huge custom castle is amazing, no tower is used, only walls, different ground heights, skill and patience and it looks stunningly close to the real one. The surroundings is 'a different story with the same subject' - breathtaking natural looking desert.

Story/Instructions: 5
A considerable effort has been done here as well, lots of information are available for the player to read. There's no room for better job.
