Langley Castle

Author File Description
bobT aka Bob Taylor
File Details
Map Size: 400x400 (Large)
Difficulty: Normal

Langley castle has stood for many generations overlooking the grand valley and surrounding hills. No one has ever dared take control of this castle and until now it has been virtually impossible. Those great armies that tried so many years ago to siege such a fortress are all but myths now and it is now up to you and your small band of soldiers to finally take control of the mighty fortress.

Although your troop numbers are small, each of your men is very well aware of the requirements of the mission. Each man knows that if one portion of their attack fails, all will be lost. Can you lead these troops to victory.

Play Langley Castle as the ATTACKER. It is really not a challenge at all to play out the map as defender and the balance has been set up for you only as attacker.

Play this scenario with your settings on NORMAL, anything higher than that could also create to much of a challenge with the lose of troop count. Good luck and be wise.

A good map overall. I enjoyed the design of the map, but there were a few concerns.

Playablity: Overall, this was very good, however, there is one point that takes it down a notch on all levels: You can attack from where you start. The rest of the map, your really dont see. I attacked from the easiest point on the map, right infront of the sign post. (-1)

Balance: Balanced nicely for an attacker, however the rest of the units did not react at all to my presence. I completed with 50%, and none of the avaliable troops helped out their lord. Also, the massive amount of -moral is offsetting. I think it would have worked better with -1 moral, instead of 5. A bit to easy. (-1)

Creativity: Alot of initiative has been shown here. A smaller attacking force, and a beautiful castle. The castle deserves 5 on its own, but you dont get to see it. :(

Map Design: GREAT MAP! Hours of work went into the map design, and it shows. The use of colouring with iron is paritcularly nice. I really like the river too, unfortunetly, my troops didnt see either. I think a more round about way needed to be shown for the "easy way in".
Perhaps haveing to wind through the castle, would have been
good. (-1)

Story: As good as any, if not better, the attacking force portray the story, however, a bit more could have been done in details. Perhaps an encampment, Siege tents, something like that. Make it look like a rushed invasion. (-1)

Keep them coming is what I say!

Playability:..4..I found this map quite challenging, playing as the author suggested, as the attacker. I beat it from an attack from in front of the castle, where it seemed the lightest defended, and took the keep with two knights standing, wich made it a real nailbiter for me. Alot of fun. Balance:..5.. I thought the scenario, played as intended was close to perfect in balance. Obviously alot of playtesting went into making this scenario balance out so well. Especialy for those who like their challenges right down to the wire. Creativity:..4..The castle was very creative and unique, and alot of time was spent building it. As attacker, you really dont get alot of time to check it out but the design really is quite nice. The idea of attacking a large castle with a small force really didn't appeal to me that much at first, but after the game I felt like I had had a good time so everything comes out in the wash. Map Design:..4..Landscapewise, the map was very well done, and as I said above the castle was very cool. Could have maybe used a few peasants walking around or a little more eye candy though. Although all the prisoners hanging in cages did look kind of neat. Story/Instructions:..4.. The story was laid out well enough, and helps to convey what is taking place when the scenario begins,...the instructions as far as I can remember were good as well. OVERALL: A good siege if you like something with alot of challenge, and few units. Dont let the few units fool you though because the challenge makes up for it. I say this map is surely worth a few plays, and I enjoyed doing so.
