Holiday
at Black Crater Lake
IN THE BEGINNING a old cratered volcano was discovered by the first human explorers. It had always been there, timeless, strong, and dormant; Yet the mountain was new to the humans. They found rich sources of iron and stone close to a fresh water volcanic lake. They walked in the fields and found patches of an extremely rare herb, Wolvesbane. This herb grows wild around the lake and is unique to this mountain chain. The explorers decided to name it Black Crater Lake after its clear water and black soil. Eventually mining men followed and settled in base camps (player 6 & 7 & 8). Since the area was wilderness and without law, relations between the camps eventually fell into chaos. A mining war sputtered to life and the bases became walled camps. Each camp was only as strong as the greed of the individual lord, and their intestinal fortitude to continue to mine and live there. Houses and Keeps were reinforced with stone walls and towers as each mining family slowly developed their defenses. Each castle can control its surrounding area from the high ground and ofcourse any tourist princes and farmers are fair game.
900 AD, January
You are a noble prince of the County of Deschutes sent to the area to visit your distant relatives in the middle of winter. Your relatives have done well managing their own mining and weapons manufacturing camp at the lake (player one - red). They have lived most of their lives at the lake and have built a well protected castle surrounded by a "Battle Ditch". This new "Battle Ditch" is a early version of the classic trench, and is perfect cover from arrows or crossbow bolts. See castle of Player One for this defensive ditch.
Since you are just on holiday, you want to proceed with the normal tourist activities like getting souvenirs and other time wasting activities like being over run by barbarians (more on that later) and hanging out on the beach to pose for anyone who is there to watch.
Firstly you decide to acquire one bushel of the rarest of the rare herbs at the pinnacle of harvest, the dreaded wolvesbane - which only grows in this area of the mountains at night. Use the land owned by your relatives (player one) to farm one bushel of wolvesbane (hops) and bring it back to the stockpile.
As you are a visiting noble (prince) you have all the normal tourist type indulgences and vanity, just to the extreme. You care not of the mining war or the struggle of the smaller mining operations. You just want two expensive mementos of your visit to Black Crater Lake to take back home to the Palace.
You hear rumors of a rare oil that only forms in pools on the floor of a natural cave located in these mountains.
Use the Player One pitch rigs to scoop out some of this grooming oil (pitch) and bring it back to the stockpile. Then you will be in possesion of the greatest lotion (pitch) of the known world, and will be the envy of all the other pompous fool tourists in the kingdom. Get these two items and you will achieve Victory and be the ultimate tourist snob.
Watch out for the barbarian hordes from the north. These barbarians are the locals who despise tourists and like to trample on wolvesbane and wreck mining camps, but mostly they like to get tourist princes and wring their necks. So hurry and get your herb (one bushel of hops) and some lotion (one jug of pitch) and leave Black Crater Lake like a good little tourist prince. This is my first map with snow, look for some of it near your granary. Enjoy and as always all comments and ratings welcomed.

I see only one farm. It belongs to the blue, and I thought I had to do a cede or something. I killed their lord, and I still don't know how to get hops. I guess i'll buy hops. I'll review this when I get home. I'm on a little 'review spree'. I think this community is getting inactive and I want the downloads to get more reviews, it keeps map designers motivated. I played and reviewed 4 maps yesterday lol. This is the last one I intend to review. |

Playability: 5
What an interesting concept. You have to recieve 1 hops and 1 pitch, but its definately not as easy as you might think. Enemies are everywhere on the map, ensuring your workers won't survive outside the gates. But... I feel it is still too easy... that will be commented on balance. Its almost like a game itself.
Balance: 4.5
When I started the game I looked around and I saw lots and lots of enemies generally. I thought it was going to be hard, so I just didn't do anything. The macement kept me occupied a little. But I noticed that they never really made any damage. I killed them off very easily. So after a long time I went out of the gates, and I noticed I killed everything very easily. In the beginning the macemen were a problem outside the gates of course, but I feel this map is too easy. I could have won much earlier if I actually had done something. I probably just made a very good timing, if macemen attacked in the end, my worker might have been killed. So I raised the score more than I actually would made it based on how it went for me.
Creativity: 4.5
I think the idea is quite creative. As I said before, its almost set up as a game in itself, sort of... Yupp, its a creative thought I think.
Map Design: 4.5
This is a somewhat weak 4. I think the terraining doesn't looks so natural in most places. Its almost too much into the 'game' feeling(that some paths are blocked to make it harder and so on) and all the trees outside your castle doesn't look natural. I expected a well designed castle and map, but it didn't meet my expectations. The "underground" paths are cool, but they too don't feel too natural... concerning they are just holes. I think more rocks and other tweaks could've made this a 5.
Also the castle was too much into the corner I tink.
Story/Instructions: 3.5
Such a "story" would normally get a 3, but this one was a little bit more complex and more into the map itself that it atleast deserves a 3.5
Additional Comments:
Honestly I love the idea, but if it was designed a little bit better, it would've gotten a much higher score.[Edited on 10/03/06 @ 06:43 AM]

I think your review is weak. Get off your high horse, your maps arent much better. |

How is it weak? Do you think it deserves a higher score?[Edited on 10/02/06 @ 05:04 PM]

You know that a low score scars a map for its lifetime. Ive seen you give out more for less. This map was just a break ("holiday") in the Timeline of maps that I am working on. You can leave the rating or change it, but know that I dont forget. |

Fine i'll boost it a little bit. But that's all I'll do. I think I tend to give 'newbies' a bit more to boost their confidence and encourage them to continue, which maybe is something I should stop doing.
But also remember that your maps aren't necessarily a straight five either. And what you said was rude.[Edited on 10/02/06 @ 06:14 PM]

Guys, Guys calm down. Your both good designers and should be co-operating with each other, not bickering. Lollard, Dougleass is entitled his opinion. Consider what he felt was weak and if you want to, edit it. Dougleass, remember people can be annoyed if they feel that the time and effort put into their maps is wasted and that can be a letdown. Please forgive and forget. |

Lollard, how was Dougleass' review weak? It covered all the aspects of an appropiate review, and the score seemed fair for a map such as this.
But as someone has already told me some people are defensive about their maps, but the score for this map I think is fair. I probably would of given the same.
And well also, Dougleass' maps have actually had alot more time spent on them - but he doesn't nessarcerily mean that he doesn't mind a low-scored review. But that is all that I will say on this matter. |

Its not such a big problem. I'm not angry, I don't want any grudge between us. I also raised the score so I hope Lollard's ok too. |
