First off let me say that one reason this map is getting such a low score is that there is no access in or out of the castle.....that being said.....PLAYABILITY: 2..While attacking I spent over an hour taking down the first line of defensive walls, and finally made my way to the castle proper, only to find out that there is no access into it...frustrating. As defender, the only troops that would attack me were archers and x-bowmen, and they were quickly dispatched of,...all I had to do was watch it happen. Then for some reason, the attacking stopped. The enemy troops just sat there by the signpost for some unknown reason. I waited 10 minutes, still no attack, so I thought I could attack them with my x-bowmen until I remembered that there was no way for me to get them out of the castle. BALANCE: 2..because as defender you cant win or lose, and as attacker you cant win or lose, so I guess it balances out in that unfavorable way.....CREATIVITY: 4...Its a cool concept and the castle is interesting, if the author would have only playtested it more....MAP DESIGN: 3...Nothing really unique here on map design,...some nice areas, and some that dont seem to fit. More landscaping would have made it more interesting, but still its not a bad map...STORY/INSTRUCTIONS: 1...Only one sentence giving you a tip..not really any story. I wish I could have given this map a higher score,..and if the author would correct the mistakes and update this map I would be happy to download it again and try it out. |

Based on the previous review I wanted to download and test drive this map as well. When I noticed that this castle was not accessable I was about to rate things down as well, until.... low and behold there is a way in.
The playability of this map is very intense and I had three restarts to finally obtain victory with 50 percent losses. I know where the other review may have tried entering the castle and I too followed the usual entrance the first time.
With careful study, it is beatable. I had to assume based on the in game AI that this map was designed for you as ATTACKER. With that in mind, I found the balance of the map and troops to be great. Following standard siege warfare I was able to get through the defenses and head into the keep.
Once again I will rate this map way up on creativity because of the tricks used in deceiving the player. Well done.
The map itself and castle proper were not anything out of the ordinary and I only found this area to be average.
Had the author spent some time on a story, I would see this map as one of the better siege offerings out there.
Write up a good story and you have a winner. |

Due to the contrasting comments left I also had to "test drive" this map. I found the playability good, I had 6 restarts before i found the way in. After i found the way in I tried basic siege warfare but i had to adapt certain ways or I would have never gotten in the castle. Balance is quite good, I didn't feel like I was overrun and I deffinately did not just walk all over it either. The creativity on this map I feel to be very good, I sat and studied this map for some time just lookin for the way in, then just lookin at the design and time that was put into it.
As for the story, I did find it lackin and if a different story was written it would make this a very good map all around. If the maker of this map was to redo the story I would rate this again. |

Playability: This is a classic example on how to study a map before you march in, swords swinging, arrows flying everywhere but where they need to go, before you get cut down for being reckless and naive. I have played this on and off for a while now and yes, it is frustrating, but the joy of finding the entrance to the castle makes up for those hours of plugging away and thinking I had lost what little siege tactics I have! Very playable, and certainly has a bit of longevity.
Balance: Okay, I thought. You need a fair few troops, and whilst the map is set at hard, I have to admit to playing on normal to redress my inability in certain areas. It's a little tough, but achievable. No doubt some will have better stats re troop loss than I did. You need to decide how best to tackle the (what seems like) hundreds of archers, or you will be cut down pretty quickly.
Creativity: It's a shame, but the no-at-all-obvious entry to this castle carries this area, a neat trick that no doubt will fool a number of people. Apart from that, it wasn't anything special.
Map Design: Okay, I may be getting this completely wrong and making comment against the author's intended work, but I must say that the map was largely uninspiring. There was no real atmosphere to the castle and surrounding lands. Yes, it's a really playable map, but it just doesn't look at all inviting.
Story/Instructions: I wanted to give this 1 because there is hardly anything there. However, what few words there are lifts it to 2.. just. Can't say anything more about this. Instructions and/or a story ARE important, it shows that effort has been made in all areas of a map design to produce something special, something that will keep people coming back, or even something that others will gain inspiration from and use on their own scenarios. It doesn't have to be pages long, quantity is not necessarily the issue. If it is unique, presented differently and grabs you when you read it (and of course relevant to the map), then credit deserves to be given.
Okay, so quite a few negative comments, but that will not detract from the simple fact that this map is oddly-enjoyable, and I will be having a few more bashes at this, no doubt. Definitely recommended. |
