The dark clouds hung low, and death lurked everywhere. Even the land itself seemed as though it had died, having been torn apart by the destruction of war. The fields were covered with the bodies. Finally it has ended.

And so it was that the land was free, but that freedom was fragile. For without the protection of your father’s army, the island and its inhabitants are vulnerable. For the first time in many years, these men knew freedom. They picked up arms and fought to take back the land that was rightfully theirs. They fought their captors who took away their pride. The clans discussed uniting together, but even with their combined strength, their numbers were still too few when compared to the evil forces that would challenge them. They chose instead, to remain hidden in their home territories. Your father, the king of Brudestile has tried many times to unite the northern clans to fight against the Arriacs. During such one mission, he heads east to fight off the enemy forces.

8 ships make their course through the choppy waters. The ocean is cold and dark. The island is but a speck on the horizon and the menacing warships are nowhere to be seen. But as the ships near the island, they approach a thick fog cutting the visibility. Your father realizes then that they might have greatly underestimated their enemy. The ships begin to rock strongly from bow to stern. As the men begin to load their crossbows enemy ships are sighted. A loud thump is heard and the arm of a catapult stands erect. A huge boulder snaps their mast and tears out their bow. Their ship begins to take on water quickly as it slows to a dead stop. The already wounded sail falls over the oil pot, catching flame quickly. Another thump and another boulder smashes into the dying ship. It turns on its side, dumping all into the ocean. His wounded knee and the weight of his armor makes treading water difficult. He clings desperately to the splintered remains of his small boat. This is the last you hear of your father.

Years pass, and the clans manage to maintain their fragile peace. You remember your father speak of peace and uniting the clans. A young rider, covered with blood and sweat, gallops his horse up the hill, dismounts, and then bows before you. “Arise my son. What news have you for me?” you ask. “I have news of the east, my king. The Arriacs’ armies are bigger and stronger than our own. They are approaching from the south.” The night comes quickly, and the exhausted troops lay their heads down to rest. The dark clouds of war hang low in the sky, blocking out even the brightest star. The moon is full, but only an eerie purple glow in the clouds gives proof that there is any moon at all. The camp is surrounded by darkness. The guards can barely see to the ends of their swords, yet they keep watch diligently. Somewhere in the night, death is creeping. Just then there’s a faint sound, a beat of the drums. The Arriacs are coming.
