La Muerte Negra (Eco)Make a success of the conquered Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. Deliver more of the Aztec gold to the King of Spain and start the job of converting the natives to the church.
StoryFollowing your arduous campaign across the Valley of Mexico and your struggle to dislodge the native rulers and fight off the competing Conquistador, The Snake, at last the great city of Tenochtitlan is yours. Now you must make a success of the peace. The King of Spain was impressed with your gift of Aztec gold. Naturally he has commissioned you to ring yet more wealth out of your new conquests. He has also conveyed to you the wishes of the Holy Father that you make converts of the natives for the church. The Aztec population is still being decimated by disease and His Majesty hopes that you can minimise its effects on the city's finances. Of course, with the breakdown of the old order there are those that would seek to exploit the situation and spread anarchy, plundering the city's wealth. You must beat them off. Go forth and economise!
Objectives
On Normal Setting:
- 12,000 gold
- 15% Blessed
- Game starts August 1521
- Game ends November 1529 (if you don't win first)
Hints for all players
Stone cannot be mined or purchased. Yet you still have to build chapels. Hmmm. Where are you to find stone? Maybe you will end up doing what the Spanish did following their conquest of the city?
Like Cortez you will find that the Aztec population is soon decimated by disease, but maybe there is some way for you to lessen the effects.
There are more hints in the Zip file.
Author's Note
The original invasion scenario was loosely based on Cortez’s first capture of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan in 1519. The Economic mission also has some basis in the history of the city following it's capture. I suppose that this might, therefore, be episode four in my New World series... Or maybe it is more of a sort of interlude?
I have categorised the dificullty level as Hard. However, I must confess to being no expert on economic missions. I have balanced it for a challenging game on Normal setting for good players. I have not tested it yet on Hard or V.Hard. If you want a relaxing game maybe you should play on easy.
I decided to make an economic mission version because I spent such a long time making the map I thought I would show it to players who prefer not to fight it out in invasions :) It was Dougleass who gave me the idea - He has released freebuild/eco versions of some of his maps.
Zip Contents
The zip contains a set of HTML pages which document the scenario. Aside from the Story they also contain:
a set of Hints files;
a description of the Features of the Tenochtitlan map with Aknowledgements;
Facts about Tenochtitlan and Cortez;
and Pictures that provided inspiration.
Acknowledgements
See the HTML pages in the zip for acknowledgements of some the map designers whose shoulders I am standing on.

Edit: Below I responded to a question in a post that was removed. Asking if these are Aztec pyramids"...
Aztec? Well kind of...
There are 3 pyramids in the map:-
The big one is based on the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan (a few hundred years before the Aztecs) and the actual Aztec great pyramid in Tenochtitlan;
The stepped pyramid is based on the Mayan pyramid at Chichen Itza (earlier than Aztec);
The small pyramid is just one I designed based on different Mesoamerican pyramids.
So none of them is a true replica of an Aztec pyramid. I just tried to make what looked good in Stronghold with the Map Editor. The Aztec pyramids seem to have stood tall with steep sloping and stepped sides. If you look at the files that come with the map you will get more information.[Edited on 12/20/06 @ 02:11 PM]

Playability: 2
Probably not the most playable scenario. It was almost impossible to beat. The huge economic goals were damn hard to reach, when bandits and plague was everywhere, and there was (basically) nothing you could do about it. On such a large map, it is almost impossible to co-ordinate an economy.
Balance: 3
Balance was O.K. The rating on the download should have been "very hard". All I'll say.
Creativity: 4
How the city was built deserved lots of praise, but the fact that it came out of something that really happened didn't add to the creativity score.
Map Design: 5
Amazing city, great use of lots of eyecandy and creative use of lowered walls, and the drawbridges were really neat! I won't spoil too much, though.
Story/Instructions: 4
Story was well done, with plenty of backkground history. Had it been totally non-fictional - that would have given it a 5.
Additional Comments:
Be realistic about the difficulty level! |

After having played on the invasion mode on "La Muerte Negra", I logically tried the economic version. Well, I must admit the economic scenario is more difficult than the other.
Playability: 4.5
The playability was pretty good. As we cannot buy or produce stone to make religious buiolding, we have to find another solution. Hopefully, finding this other solution isn't too complicated. In fact, the real difficulty comes from the money. We don't have a lot of time to obtain the gold required, and we have to work with tne negative events which have a strong impact on your popularity rate. So, putting imposition rate is quite complicated. About the brigands, I don't know if it's normal or not, bu, when I played, they don't attack my castle. They just move from a point to another point, and retrace theirs footsteps. The only problem of them was the popularity. Yet, I dislike the fires for a very long time. I must act very quickly to destroy the fired building before a mortal propagation. Quite irritating, I really hate the fires.
Balance: 4
Well, I disagree on this point with arfomath. Yes, the map is really very hard, but not impossible to beat. I win at the first atempt, but, for this, I destroyed all the building on my town and sell the wood obtained. I wined with a very bad popularity, close to the end (three months before...). It's a map very intensive. Because of the negative events, we canot repose yourself just a few seconds, we have to reduce the food alimentation, or to reduce the impots... It was hard, like all your other maps, in fact.
Creativity: 3.5
Because of the design, this map isn't like another map. But the objectives are quite... normal. Obtaining gold with a limit time and negatives events are objectives very basic. Yet, I think quite original the means to obtain the stone.
Map Design: 5
Nothing to say, I've already said what I think of tbe design of the map in the invasion version of this map.
Story/Instructions: 4
This story is less developed than the military version, but she's complete, illustrating very well the map. So, this is a good story. |
