Ah, it's good to be back, I see a lot of new members around here. Welcome to stronghold heaven!
Sorry for the several months of disapperance, I've recently returned from the middle of the Pacific ocean (yeah, I'm a sailor), and unfortunately this site is considered by my ship to be a little too frivolous for it's precious bandwidth (blasphemy!). My appologies if any thought I dropped off the side of the earth. I look forward to catching up in the forums, submissions, and maybe a review or two.
Enough small talk, on to my latest map. Treat this one like realestate: location, location, location. When choosing your keep consider height advantage versus resources. There'll be a lot of one and a little of the other. This map works well against computer opponents, but probably works best as a multiplayer.
Enjoy!
BATTLE OF THE VASSALS
STORY:
Jerusalem has finally fallen to the Crusaders and the newly elected ruler, Godfrey of Bouillon, has ordered three vassals to explore and settle the wide reaches of the new lands east of the Dead Sea. Their long march was punctuated by little as they wandered through parched mountains, a barren region fit for none but death. At last they came to a large winding valley among the rocky hills. Game was abundant and small streams trickled from the surrounding mountains to wind across the valley floor, producing oasis where farms could thrive and groves of palms could be chopped. But dissention arose as the three lords could not decide on ownership of the new land. All attempts at reconciliation failed and disputes erupted. With war inevitable, the three set out to stake their claims.
The first lord, a shrewd economist, took the flat land to the east, in the hopes of amassing wealth by trade with caravans he could send north to his neighbors. While his keep was low and vulnerable, he was beset on all sides by high escarpments and a fertile crescent with many resources.
The second Lord, a keen and sensible strategist, took a low plateau to the west to place his keep. His land was on higher ground, and while his farm land could not be described as abundant, there was a fine balance of resources to build a handsome fiefdom.
The third Lord, the despot, chose the highest land to the South to build his keep. Like his heart, his expansive land was cold and barren with fewer resources and little farm land. But this concerned him little, for he knew he could make an impregnable stronghold on the high rocky walls.
Now the valley and the mountainsides echo with the drums of war.....

Wierd...thanks for the heads up, I'll check it out right away.
Update: I downloaded my own file and checked out all combinations with Lionheart, as well as the other AI's for good measure. No problems at all. Could you try downloading the map again? Maybe something went haywire during your first download. If anybody else has problems please let me know. Thanks

fantastic stuff. played from all keeps , this game is challenging and fresh each time i have played it. even staying in the same place and rotating AIs it gives a completely different game due to the terrain. The game pace is just as i like it, fast to build a strong economy and large force.
Balance: 4
i know it states the map as unbalanced, but i felt there could have been a few more resources for the plateaux. i didnt think their height advantage took place of that . otherwise great !
Creativity: 5
the map was excellent .. not too crowded , as is the common trend with maps here. and good idea of choice of start up point
Map Design: 5
awesome . this map is so natural looking !! it has the polished feel of a map by surajsubba, but the landscape was more dramatic. attention to detail all over and excellent terraforming :)
Story/Instructions: 5

Thanks for the great review, Liberty! Yeah, after I posted the map I thought a little more oasis would have been good for the high plateau too. Oh well.... |
