Blown off Course-Chapter 3

Author File Description
von Schmidt
File Details
Map Size: 300x300 (Medium)
Difficulty: Normal
Minimap:
This is the third map in the Blown off Course series. It is fairly hard, and you'll be swarmed with monks and spearmen. Kill the enemies at the beginning, and build lots of blacksmiths and armorers. Try and keep using stuff up to leave room on your stockpile. If the stories mix you up, don't read them... I'll make a map pack with all the Blown off Course maps, and a new, revised story. It'll take me some time, so don't expect anything from me for awhile. Have Fun!

**UPDATE** If anyone playing this map has found it too easy, I have made an extra map called "Blown off Course 3 (Hard)" with more enemies attacking you. It is in the .zip file.

Blown of Course 3

Playability: 4.5
The last chapter is definitely the most thrilling. I will start by saying that this is a truly creative mission: I had to defend my lands and the town (it wasn’t possible to build a castle) with troops on ground and the only help was the two look-out towers. It wasn’t an easy challenge: I lost a couple of times until I found out that engineers are allowed to train. They were a major help constructing approximately 30 fire ballistae. The two hills near the manor house were very important strategic positions: I kept my archers, crossbowmen and ballistae there. The pitch helped a lot in the first invasions and the swordsmen finished the work if archers couldn’t handle it. The friendly bandits were great reinforcements to my army. As for the economic side of the mission, well, it was amusing too. You offered a lot of ways to increase the gold achievement, but it wasn’t that important as you gave 13000 starting gold. I focused on achieving wood, metal, meat and the most important: weapon production. The lions gave me a headache in the beginning but soon my town expanded. The only thing that I didn’t like was the lack of space. I had to build a few buildings far away from the stockpile. And talking about stockpiles, you gave the mission an interesting style of play: only for types of resources can be kept because the player can’t build a second stockpile. In addition, playing this mission was fun! Great work!

Balance: 5
The invasions were great, especially the two last ones. It was a huge battle. Maybe the invasions were too often but this made the mission harder and more interesting. I like that the enemy had a strategy: they tried to circle my town coming from both directions. It was very challenging. The iron ore was spread nicely, and the little oasis in the North was an important in achieving bread or hops (Although I obtained meat and forgot about bread and ale).

Creativity: 4.5
Well as I said earlier the mission is very creative. I should explain why: firstly, the idea of defending a town with troops on ground isn’t used very often because it’s quite hard to balance the invasions, etc. Secondly, I liked your building availability. The fire ballistae were the key unit the mission, I noticed that later. (How stupid of me :D) The stockpile idea was great too, as you limited the number of resources. (Only four different types could be kept). The design of the map was creative too: my town was in a small gap between the mountains and I had to use them to defend King Geronimo. All in all, you showed a lot of creativity in this one!

Map Design: 3.5
I must say that the design of this chapter is by far the best. You really worked a lot to create the peninsula. I like the style of the mountains: you covered them with iron, rocks and shrub. It made them look more realistic. I also noticed that small oases were created quite well. You mixed them with shrub and trees. Good job! My town is situated in a gap and it looks interesting. You added lions, deer and seagulls to make the map livelier. Although the sea was a downer, despite that you created the beach quite nicely, but the sea itself looked empty. You could add a few islands (big and small ones) and rocks. This will make the sea look more realistic. Still, the map design is good.

Story/Instructions: 5
Nothing has changed, Duke Geronimo finds himself another dangerous enemy and I have to lead his men to victory. The idea is nice, I like it. Great work!

Additional Comments:

In addition, I liked these map series a lot! Great job von Schimdt!

Sincerely,
