A ship is due to arrive at your little island in the middle of the sea, and the King has requested that you prepare to replenish it's supplies for it's next journey!
This is a small island with plenty of trees, access to iron to make weapons if you want to, pitch (make believe that it's to re-waterproof the ships hull), and stone (to generate revenue). There's enough space to handle several farms, you'll just need to use wood cutters to clear some space once you get started.
Not a hard map, but loads of fun.
5/20/2002 UPDATE: this version is now event filled and some minor fixes to the map, and added a lovely stone dock for the arriving ship. Should be a good challenge now! |

Playability: Okay, so no bugs in playing this map at all, but this must be partly due to absolutely no events whatsoever. If there were random events scattered throughout this map, then it would rate far higher. I have to confess to being bored mid way through, yet I carried on expecting something to react against, but nothing. Is this correct?
Balance: A difficult one to rate. With no events to impede the mass-resourcing of the map, I can't really give any good points. But, the large amount of trees to clear was interesting and I had twelve woodcutters chopping away just about all through the game. Reaching the gold win condition was a matter of selling off wood or stone, nothing more to it. Achieving the food was not too much of a trial. Likewise ale production.
Creativity: Another nice idea here. Shame it was let down by the points raised above.
Map Design: What a shame the game is rather tepid when you have a map like this! Okay, so not much going on in the surrounding seas, but the use of terrain in constructing the island is, in my opinion, second to none. The landscaping was very good, extremely realistic and looked fantastic, well suited to the story. You have to fight for space a little bit here. Loved it.
Story/Instructions: Not sure what to make of the false goods requirements, but I used the imagination and yes, it fits in with the story, though no use extracting pitch when you can't sell it. Still thought it added to the story.
Overall, a mixed bag here. Add some events and a little tweaking here and there and this map could be a bit of a gem. Worth downloading to see how careful, clever terrain modelling can really add so much to a map. I'll certainly download other maps by the author, if the terrain continues to be as good as this. |

Good ideas! I'll see about doing an updated version with some events. The current map is event-less for the most part.
Thanks for the compliments on the landscape, I actually playtested this map at least two dozen times to make sure the land played well. Glad you noticed. :) |

The first part of the scenario felt like a funny exercise. Collecting enough of a good that usually comes later in the eco development is a rather different experience. It is possible to achieve it even on very hard - at all costs. Ran into a disaster with deer hunting. The herd did not respawn quick enough, and for some time I had to give high bribes from selling raw materials. (Pitch works in the updated version).
The happier then plays the relaxed final part.
Exciting to notice that dairy farms also fit on slightly rising spots of land! |
