I've played the Stronghold games quite alot (SH1 + SH2), but I've just recently taken an interest in mapmaking. I decided to first build up my skills with SH1, so here it is: my first map!
I designed this freebuild to be difficult early on. There are quite a few wolves, so you'll need to put your starting bows to use as soon as possible. Much of the terrain is covered by trees, so lots of logging early on will be neccessary to have significant space for farming. The stones mark access points on the hill. There are two signposts, but it is pretty easy to defend from any direction, so a tough invasion would probably have to greatly outnumber your own forces.
I checked out this map and found it enjoyable for a first one.I have to say that it isn't half bad.I wanted to post a review, but reconsidered because there were some faults and I didn't want to give it a bad look.
So.The first thing that took my eye was that the map was cramped.Normally this isn't a big problem, but in your case it seems a bit off.The wolves are a nice touch , but they are too close for comfort.Just doesn't seem right.
But if you like making small maps ,than I advice against placing so much resources:stone, iron, wood. If it was up to me I would have placed only iron and nothing else. The player should buy the needed stocks.Again this isn't my map and you should feel free to place whatever you like.I just think that it would look more realistic. The trees are a nice add.But I thought it was a mistake leaving an open ground (in the centre) where the castle should be.One could get an idea that they were deliberately cut to make room for the castle. The boulders , iron and marsh are placed too close to each other and doesn't seem right. You used the equalizer.Thats nice ,because lots of the mapmakers make a mistake (in their first maps) , by leaving the terrain as it is.Thats a major problem. An advice:When you finish the terrain make sure to place some rocks shrubs etc. That gives it a nice look. The river is a nice add to the map.But at some parts it's wide narrow then wide again. That isn't very good because it looks fake.In the future I advise you to make larger maps or put less elements in the small ones. When looking at this map I remember my first one.I didn't post it but I was very proud of my work.I hope that you post other maps like that and I will be more than happy to play them.
