After a great deal of time and effort, Arthus and I are most pleased to bring the stronghold community the latest in our LOTR map series: Minas Morgul: Faramir’s Plight.
We hope you enjoy playing it as much as we did designing it...and a great deal more than we did scripting it. Quite the struggle...
The scenario is one of our own imagination, and doesn't follow any strict or accurate LOTR profile other than design recreation. The story is told from the point of Faramir who with his men rides against the fortress Minas Morgul and the Witch King of Angmar. This scenario takes on a 'what if' role. With Osgiliath taken, and Mordors army ready to strike Minas Tirith, Faramir rides to destroy the Witch King's forces and win his fathers respect.
We hope you enjoy it.
Here is some of the story, as usual you will find the full document, along with some helpful hints in the zipfile.
Minas Morgul: Faramir’s Plight - By Warlord Designs
Osgiliath is fallen. The once proud city now lays in ruin and its grandeur has succumbed to the ravages of war. The white bell towers in which doves had nestled and hatched their young, now crumble-their majesty but a memory, but a dream. The sound of children laughing has been drowned out by the sound of drums-and not even a whisper of good can be heard. Those who could have now fled to great white city of Minas Tirith, but this evil is different from other things. It moves swiftly like fire in the meadows, bringing down all that resist its wrath. It feels nothing, not the warmth of love-nor the bitter cold of sorrow. It is unlike anything else in this middle earth. The great city of Osgiliath which once proudly overlooked the golden fields of Pelennor is consumed. Mordor has come, they wait…
We slip by unnoticed and fade into the night…

Playability: 5
Very, very nice!!! The enemy still attacks comming up from Minas Morgul:P FANTASTIC!!!
Balance: 5
It was very hard for me to "make balance good", the bigest problem was to warrant people food. But with some of effort i did it- it was very exciting
Creativity: 5
It's very good idea to put together protecting the hold and attacking enemy's fortress and situate it in climat of LOTR- This is awesome!!!
Map Design: 5
Like I said before- Arthus & Alexus are the best mapmakers in my opinion!!! Create the fortress based on movie and make it playable- that's very hard. Minas Morgul looks perfect, surroundings is also perfect!!!
Story/Instructions: 5
Maybe too short description in the game, but all the story and "walkthrough" tight in documents- the story of Faramir is very nice- I love it!!!
Additional Comments:
Summing up, next great projest by WL_D - I order it to everyone, who looks for very good made, and valuable invasion!!!

There is only one path for the enemy to reach you, and the pacing of the scenario is such that they'll be reaching you (or attempting to) virtually all of the time. The scenario has no events to change things up. Mostly your task is to find an economy that gets the job done, and remember to use your market regularly to get what you need. This is kind of interesting, as the tools you're typically given to maintain your popularity have been taken away, or severely reduced at least. Once you have this figured out though, it's a matter of fine-tuning to speed things up, and waiting for a long time to recruit an army to kill the enemy lord.
Attacking the castle successfully requires you to either be very good at managing an assault and coordinating soldiers, or go for sheer volume of bodies. I chose the latter strategy. It works, but it's not necessarily the most fun. Choosing how to attack Minas Morgul was interesting though and helped this score.
It is possible to destroy the stairway up to the inner gatehouse of Minas Morgul, which can ruin your day if you're not careful.
Early on, I had to rely on tight grouping of swordsmen to absorb the attacks. This was somewhat tedious. Eventually I was able to recruit enough archers to make this not an issue.
Balance: 5
I completed this level on very hard after three attempts. The first two I restarted fairly soon after I began. It's a well-balanced level given the playability.
Creativity: 4.5
This score was chosen based on the idea of Faramir setting out to retake Minas Morgul, rather than Osgiliath, and having some hope of actually succeeding. It's kind of a cool what-if scenario. Additionally, the economic setup and the design and troop distribution of Minas Morgul were contributors. The one low point was the homogeneity of play throughout the scenario.
Map Design: 5
The map design is excellent. The castle is very well constructed and has been meticulously crafted to recreate the spiky wall pattern seen in the films. The extra height from the Himalayan terrain was also effective in creating a convincing valley setting. The moat river was an excellent touch. The player's castle is also well-made. There were some times when I thought maybe there could stand to be fewer burnt areas, but otherwise, lots of attention was given to the landscaping in general and it makes for a wonderful map.
Story/Instructions: 5
Good story, describes what it is that you're up to in the scenario.
Additional Comments:
A gorgeous map. If you're looking for something that is nice to look at with an interesting castle to study, and if you like working the market on a regular basis to sustain your people, this would be a good one to download. |
