On my forum, Celuiquipense is the "historian" man. The medieval story is its hobby, and it's a good mappeur. So he has decided a few months ago to associate these two elements in one by creating maps about the historic crusaders.

So, he began by the first Crusade. In this crusade, the French knight, Godefroi de Bouillon decided to attack the Arabs, responding to the call of Urbain II in 1095.

With his army, he went ton Constantinople, actually managed by the Emperor Alexis Comène, who gave him hospitality in his city.

However, a part of the Godefroi's army was composed of poverty-stricken and fanatics Christian, who decided to steal the villages near from Constantinople, and also the streets of the city. They took the control of some districts of the town, imposing a brutal control, especially for the Arabs and Jewish people.

A little plat of the Godefroi's army was sent to stop them, to liberate the city, and finally to reconstrust Constantinople. However, a little bit shocked by Godefroi's behaviour, Alexis Comène decided to do not continue to supply his army, so the knights must do their goods alone with the support of liberated people. Of course, they were attacked by the near villages, and also bands of bandits.

Now, this is some screens picked out of the map :

Sorry for my English if I've written incomprehensible words, lol.

Castlefreak Although logical, i find it hard to credit that there were parts of the first crusade army who sacked the outer villages around Constantinople.

I have seen no mention of it (on the web) happening. but yes there were groups of impoverished people within the first crusade who left in March, April of 1096 instead of August like Urban II wanted.

History is not completely accurate in each account, so who knows?

I trust in the knowledge of Celuiquipense. I d'ont know exactly from what website or books he takes out these informations, but I think he has used the book "L'épopée des croisades" from René Gousset.

Moreover, I can read this on Wikipedia :

"Godefroy de Bouillon refuse tout d'abord de prêter le serment d'allégeance exigé par le basileus de tous les chefs croisés. Il faut lui couper les vivres pour le faire céder. Il sacrifie enfin ses principes à l'esprit de croisade et prête à contrecœur le serment requis" (Sorry, it could be quite difficile for me to traduce, lol)

So, globally, it takes back the scenario imagined by Celuquipense, even if he has just exaggerated a little the true story.
Lord Karpathea Just on a side note, wikipedia is NOT a good place to look up hitorical facts and information, due to its unreliability.

This is what says Encarta about him : "À son arrivée à Constantinople en décembre 1096, il refusa de prêter serment à l'Empereur byzantin Alexis Ier Comnène
