Defend stronghold of Montsegur as Cathars or destroy it and kill all of Cathars as Catholic French Troops...

This map is based on existing stronghold and I decided to make it to know if I am able to make any maps. Just tell me if you like it.

Map Design3.5
Playability: 4.5

Don't be fooled by this small map and castle - this map can have you staring at the screen for hours! It was excellently playable, you could try loads of different defending strtegies here against the enemy. And the small map isn't a drawback either - the play in this map is fairly intense - if you make one mistake, you're in for a very tough scrap.

Balance: 4

Balance was good, but a bit off. The proximity of the signpost to the castle was one big problem. By bunching up all my archers, I could shoot a large number of the attackers as they were just sitting ducks. A 300x300 map would have been better. Once my walls were all breached, the enemy poured in - only to find an indestructible wall of swordsmen waiting for them, slaughtering them all on the spot. A few less swordsmen and some of them replaced by pikemen would made this scenario that much more interesting, for both attacker and defender. It would have been better to include a few more siege engines, as my knights totalled both catapults as they just got built. In the future, go a little heavier on the siege engines and less on the spearmen, because they're about as useful to an attacker as an army of peasants.

Creativity: 3

A decent historical castle, it seemed fairly well built, but I saw nothing really that was new on this map. Try to learn how to use the lowered walls trick - this is a must-learn for any designer, and the little effort spent will pay off very quickly.

Map Design: 3.5

Nothing too special here, but I liked the waterfall. Landscape was enough to satisfy the need of the small map and the castle, but I saw nothing special here. This is not common for a beginner's map - very little unearthly flat ground as one of the base terrain heights has been left.

Story/Instructions: 3

Provided that it was a historical castle, you couldn't do much with putting in a short fiction story. Only a little information was provided about the castle, but I'll let this one go. In the future, research the castle some more - the minimum here for a 5 or 4.5 in score is a full page of typed, 12pt font, single spaced, with 1 inch margins.

Additional Comments:

A decently built siege map. It was good overall, but it would do future maps good if you learned the lowered walls trick (I use it VERY intensely) and some other more involved tricks, such as the 2,000 stone printing press.

Don't worry if you feel this is a bit bluntly put - I am usually a bit tough as a reviewer. ;) You certainly can make some good maps - you'll be excellent once you learn more in-depth mapmaking tools and tricks.

(I have edited by review, as I thought I was too lenient on the story and creativity.)

The Hitman Wow, very good for first map... I think we shouldn't rate first maps, if the creater hasn't said earlier to rate it... 3.8 is high rating for first map, read the artofmath's recommendations, so you will go to upper level :)
Sulis Not true, anyone has the option to review a map if they wish, whether it is a first attempt or not. Please bear this in mind in future.
