Belvoir Castle, 1242.
Shortly after the Muslim rulers gave what was left of Belvoir castle back to European hands, the Knights Templar, following a tribute from the King of Jordan, decided to rebuild the fortification in exchange for protection. After just one year of construction, the Star of Jordan was rebuilt to its former glory. Using leftover funds, the Templars brought five holy relics, and distributed them in the surrounding territory. Once the news of this new construction spread back to Europe, a massive influx of pilgrims pass this area to reach Jerusalem.
The locals have had enough outsiders. Local leaders have rallied discontented soldiers from the area. A host of infantry arrived, including groups desert nomads, armed with light bows riding swift black horses. A number of recent converts from the Europeans have arrived too. Together, they must retake this crusader vantage point.
However, the Crusaders have learned of the plans. Detachments march from all over the Middle East from Crusader settlements, all converging to the same spot to relieve the siege. Their numbers are too many to be faced: the castle must be taken and repaired for our own defense against the European advance. Their army will arrive in 15 days (game years). Siege weapons have been constructed to storm the castle, but they must be carefully deployed, for there are little funds to construct more.
The local soldiers have arrived in formation on two sides of the castle, while the converts have been forced into ranks. Heavily armoured Templar Knights leave the gates of the castle. The trumpet sounds, and the knights charge, the clanking of the hooves and the armour clearly audible. Enemy morale is strong. The siege has begun! Only the destruction of the 5 relics could dampen the new Crusader spirit…

Looks really promising! The map design is somehow similar to few other missions, although great work, artofmath! I'll give it a go as soon as possible.
Thanks for sharing your work |

The master ;) Yeah there are familiar lines, but still it's so good... I really like the idea for custom paths into the mountains. Remind me of trenches or some secret tunnels :) |

Hint:
Once you're in the map, be ready to give some quick and exact commands, the action begins as soon as you open the map. ;) |

Well, I played with a lot of pleasure on your map, which make me think to the map "Krak of Chevaliers" by WarLord_Designs (I wouldn't be surprised si you told me this map has inspired yourself). I'm going to do a complete review, thing which is not easy for a French to do, so, excuse me for the mistakes...
Playability: 4.5
Well, it was a good map. The limit time is very large, but taking Belvoir Castle needs a lot of time. Making directly a assault is for totally pointless. Bevoir Castle contains a lot of troops, so I must make a real siege, by killing little by little the enemies. Moreover, at th ebeginning, we must quickly move our troops to defend the siege weapons. For me, the siege tower, or the fires ballistas, were indispensable to put down the castle. In fact, the limit time compels the player to do a strong assault after having cleaned the defense. In any case, the siege of Belvoir Castle was very interesting. I spoke in my introduction of the Krak des Chevaliers, by WarLord.Well, the defect of this map is that we're not forced to send all your troops in a last and powerful assault. Here, if we are as slow as me, it's necessary.
Balance: 4
Making "Normal" was a good choice. The challenge isn't quite simple, but it's not necessary to be a champion to take Belvoir Castle. I didn't do a second trial ; I win the mission at the first attempt, but quite close to the end of the time authorized.
Creativity: 3.5
Well, a siege isn't very a special map. For me, your map is very similar to the Krak des Chevaliers, so I can't say it's a map really original. Yet, with the swordmen who patrol around the castle, or the date limit, I play a game finally quite original. Moreover, the assaults at the beginning were very dangerous, which is not the case in a lot of other sieges, where the assaults from the enemies aren't really dangerous. Here, we have to protect and to use carefuly the siege weapons if we want to win.
Map Design: 4.5
I see in the .doc file provided with the map a photography of Belvoir Castle. You've did a really good reproduction. We play in a mountainous and plaisant area, but it's especially the castle which is attractive. It's seems to be nice on the minimap, and he'es really nice. A good work, clearly.
Story/Instructions: 5
You give a .doc file very precise and instructive about Belvoir Castle : its history, or its architecture... Moreover, there is a specific story about this siege
Additional Comments:
In conclusion, Belvoir Castle is a really good map, complete and nice to play. Not too hard, not too simple, a really good work. I send you my congralutations ! |

barbarius, thanks for your review. I'm not a very skilled sieger of castles, so when I played this map, I probably found it harder than you did. ;) I completely understand what you mean by difficult in terms of language... I'm a French student and I struggle with le sunjonctif. :P
I'll do an update on the map soon, making it just that much harder. Definitely, the time limit is a bit too long, and it seems the knights weren't strong enough to do significant damage to your troops. :P
(Note to self... make the enemy bigger!)[Edited on 05/21/08 @ 01:28 PM]

Well, about the time limit, I don't think it's too long... In fact, if you use my tactic, which consist by using fire ballista to kill the enemies, you have just the time to kill all the enemies (I was really close to the end). Yet, I don't think I've used the quickest method. Other comentaries about this siege should be very useful. |
